Sony's wise-cracking duo, Ratchet and Clank, are heading to the big screen next year, and they've just released the first ever poster for the movie!
Here it is...
I'm glad to see that the film-makers are keeping the delightfully bad puns going, as is the tradition of the original video game series that brought you titles like 'Going Commando' and 'Up Your Arsenal'! It's also worth noting that the city in the background looks a lot like Metropolis - the fictional futuristic city featured in the video game series - which may mean were going back there for the movie.
The Origin Story
The heroic Lombax Ratchet and his miniature robotic sidekick, Clank, have remained iconic Playstation mascots ever since Insomniac Games released the original platformer in 2002. The series has been a huge success and has sold 26 million copies worldwide to date! The hugely imaginative and charming games have always had stunning cinematics, so it makes sense that the duo would move to the big screen eventually.
Rainmaker Entertainment, the animation studio who made Escape From Planet Earth, is in charge of the adaptation. It will be helmed by first-time feature director Jericca Cleland - who worked on Finding Nemo - and is written by TJ Fixman, who also penned the game series, meaning the movie will hopefully retain the same endearing, childish humor that won fans over in the first place.
A Galactic Adventure
Sony has confirmed that the plot of the film will be inspired by the first game of the series, appealing to the nostalgic Playstation 2 players who first wielded Ratchet's ass-kicking wrench over twelve years ago! Don't worry though, many of your favorite characters from the later games will also be in attendance, including the hilariously incompetent Doctor Nefarious. You also might recognize some of the same voices, as James A. Taylor (Ratchet), David Kaye (Clank) and Jim Ward as (Qwark) will all return to reprise their roles from the franchise.
Here's the synopsis from Sony:
Ratchet is the last of his kind – a foolhardy 'lombax' who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.
