When it comes to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, it becomes extremely difficult for me to fault a single aspect of it. As a guy who spent 6 years studying cinema, I've come in contact with a lot of tremendous works and as an equal lover of music, I've focused on the oeuvre's of a lot of composers.
The Last of Us was a dream for me, as the game demonstrated, not only how great a video game can be, but how intelligent cinematic storytelling can be equalled on a console. Part of the reason that The Last of Us had such an astounding impact on me was due to the glorious work of Gustavo Santaolalla on the score for the game.
Therefore, though I don't want to imagine this world without him, I thought I'd see what other composers might suit this world if Naughty Dog went and made The Last of Us 2 without Santaolalla. Be sure to leave a comment on who you think would be your favourite composer for The Last of Us 2, aside from Gustavo of course!

The Last of Us 2 Proposed Composers
Fist off, I recommend you check out Gustavo himself talking about his musical background and sharing how he came to write the music for The Last of Us. One must acknowledge his mastery when it comes to the art of music. He's also done astounding work in The Inside Man (a piece was taken from one of his studio albums), Brokeback Mountain, Into the Wild, Babel, Amores Perros and 21 grams.

Now that we've acknowledged the genius of this man, let's take a look at some popular, and more unknown composers from the world of film who could lend their talents to the The Last of Us 2.
Vig is a Hungarian composer, poet and song writer. Though his solo career isn't that well known outside of his native land, his film work is popular within the art film circle. Vig has collaborated with Bela Tarr, a Hungarian director renowned for his highly depressing films of extraordinary length. One of his works, Satantango, is actually over 7 hours long!
While his films may be torturous and difficult at times (though incredibly powerful), the music is always sublime. Check out this piece Vig wrote for Wreckmeister Harmonies, I really think it could work for The Last of Us 2!
Thomas Newman is one of the great composers of our time. His work with director Sam Mendes is particularly commendable. Think of the intriguing strangeness of American Beauty and the heart rending pain of Road to Perdition. Do you think his music could suit a game like The Last of Us, or is it too light? Have a listen to the piece below and let me know what you think!
Let's not even think about the score of Twilight here, I'm talking about this composers glory days. This American composer made his debut with the Coen Brother's Blood Simple and is renowned for his work with the two genius directors, with their most recent collaboration being True Grit.
But let's take a listen to the glorious work he created for possibly the Coen Brother's greatest work, Fargo. The atmosphere it evokes could certainly fit in with The Last of Us 2.
This man is a genius. An absolute genius. His work is so dynamic and he can seemingly write for any kind of film out there, whether it be the wacky quirkiness of Wes Anderson with Fantastic Mr. Fox or Grand Budapest Hotel, or the existential musings of Terence Malick in Tree of Life, this man has been able to find a piece to fit! Can you see Joel and Ellie in this piece?
I can so see the piece below being in The Last of Us 2! The English composer has been extremely successful, with his film scores ranging from the likes of Requiem for a Dream to Noah and even Mass Effect 3. Take a listen to his great work in an astounding little film called Moon. If you haven't seen it, then you are seriously missing out!
So, who do you think could compose the score for The Las of Us 2? Let us know in the comments and stick in a clip of what piece you think reflects this choice best!
