I think most of us can agree that Hollywood's incessant need to remake and reboot movies from our childhood is getting a bit out of hand. Between Total Recall, Carrie, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I have developed some serious trust issues when it comes to people touching the classics. Is nothing sacred?
That's why I was pretty surprised to find myself so on board with some of the concept art reimagining the characters of one of my childhood favorites, The NeverEnding Story. The artist Nicolas Francoeur adds a touch of grittiness which I think would pair perfectly with the jaded personality I've developed in my old(er) age.
While nothing is in the works at the moment (that I know of), it does make me wonder. How would the darkness of modern fantasy filmmaking mesh with this staple of the mid-80s movies?
Atreyu & Artax
Swamp of Sadness? More like swamp of fuggedaboutit.
This luckdragon doesn't look like the puppety one in the 1984 version. This design of Falkor is not one to be messed with and could easily swoop in and save the day.
It doesn't look as much like a tortoise, but it is more like how I pictured an ancient being that's been living in the Swamp of Sadness. Also, please don't sneeze on me.
Yeah, if the Nothing had sent this version of Gmork after me I would have felt even more threatened. Those eyes. Yeesh!
This is the only one that I have lukewarm feelings towards. The Rockbiter was such a fun character. How is he supposed to comment on the vintage years of limestone rocks with that scary hellmouth?
Gluckuck's shell is a major upgrade. It looks like he could boost into hyperdrive at any moment. Bonus points for looking more like a racing snail than a weird dog-like creature in a shell.
Well this is a much darker take on Night Hob and his giant bat. Perhaps a bit too dark? There must be a happy middle ground between the teddy bear looking one of 1984 and this demon bat.
Woah check out that headdress and those shoulder pads! The Childlike Empress looks crazy fierce in this redesigned costume.
While I really do appreciate this concept art as an adult, I'm still not sure if I want anyone to remake The NeverEnding Story, at least not just yet. I think the 8-year-old version of me would be very upset if the characters went from looking like cheesy puppets to some crazy CGI version of their past selves.
But then again, I have been wrong and pleasantly surprised by some darker fantasy movies as of late. Maybe under the proper guidance, a remake of this childhood classic could be fantastic and beautiful. It seems like it might be only a matter of time at this point.
