As with any art form, video games have often looked to real life for inspiration for characters, locations, worlds and narratives. We're all aware that Kratos from God of War is based off of Greek mythology, as this is an intrinsic element to all of the games. You may have even heard that Andrew Ryan from Bioshock is based on Howard Hughes, a madman billionaire who lived in hotel.
But I'm here to show you three Pokemon characters that are based off of real-life myths from Asia, and they are seriously creepy. Be prepared to have these cute Pokemon evolve into terrifying monsters from your nightmares.
Pokemon Based on Urban Myths
Be prepared. Sneasel is our first Pokemon we have an unusual story to tell you about. This creature's name, if presumed to be an abbreviation of a sneaky weasel, is an apt summation of its inspiration, a Kamaitachi. The name is a compound of the Japanese words for sickle and weasel, and the methods they use to prey on humans will change the way you see Sneasels forever.
These creatures hunt in packs of three and are allegedly super fast little monsters. They use this speed to get the better of us in a HORRIBLE manner! You ready for this?? The first Kamaitachi knocks you down, the second uses its razor-sharp talons to flay the flesh from your legs, and the third mends your wounds so you don't realize you've been attacked. All this happens in the blink of an eye; you think you just tripped, while three weasel monsters with huge claws run off chewing on your leg skin. Yep...
Froslass, the strictly female Pokemon, is based upon the Yuki-onna legend. This tells the tale of an icy woman. One who floats on top of snow and guides unknowing men into her clutches with her icy breath and beauty. They are then consumed by a frost or a blizzard and never return again. It has also been said that she drains the blood of her victims, sometimes invading homes and kidnapping children as they sleep. Myths are terrifying.
Trust me, it just gets weirder and weirder. This is already quite a peculiar Pokemon, with a horrifying crocodile head growing out of the back of a sweet little creature in a dress. While this may have freaked you out as a child, wait till you see what the hell this thing is based off of!!
Futakuchi-onna, is the name of the inspired mythical creature. It is a terrifying mouth that resides at the back of a woman's head, hiding beneath her long hair. It's a cautionary tale that warns women against dieting, that should they not eat enough, a second mouth would grow at the back of their head which would require twice the amount of food as normal.
The creature eventually gains control of the woman's hair and begins to grab at food at random in order to pander to its insatiable diet. And they decided to base Pokemon off of these things?!
