Paul Wesley is following his Vampire Diaries co-star, Nina Dobrev, onto the silver screen by starring in, directing and producing the upcoming sci-fi action flick, Convergence.

Most of the major plot details about the movie are being kept closely guarded for now, but Convergence is described as a college-age flick that mixes elements of The Matrix and Flight Club with a basis on "scientific fact".

The main characters in the movie will be an underground cell of bio-technical engineers and an MIT mastermind (who I'm assuming will be played by Wesley) exploring a new technology that turns out to be beyond the limits of human control.

Paul Wesley will have his hands full with his first foray into feature length directing because the actor, who is best known as the smoldering Stefan Salvatore, will also be starring in and producing the sci-fi flick.

The 32-year-old actor explained how he came to choose the role for himself in the statement below:

My first couple of hiatuses I was looking for indies to separate me from the younger material. Now Iā€™m looking for flawed characters, because my (Vampire Diaries) character is very heroic. My character in Convergence is not the protagonist but is the guy who pushes things a little too far, and too hard, and produces some scary results.

Filming is scheduled for next spring in Shanghai and Atlanta, the latter being great news for any [The Vampire Diaries](series:200853) fans worried about Wesley running away from Mystic Falls!

Do you think Paul Wesley should take on more movie roles?
