This morning a group of Moviepilot writers and me were exceptionally lucky to have the surreal experience of talking with Matthew Vaughn, Director & Co-Writer of Kingsman: The Secret Service, over breakfast. The film reunites him with his Kick Ass companions - co-writer Jane Goodman and comic book creator Mark Millar - and it's definitely worth a viewing when it's released on February 13th 2015! I'll be paying to see it again, for sure!!
It's a triumphant, subversive, joy filled love letter to Roger Moore era Bond with a hilarious, filthy and dark sense of humor. It is poised to become a firm fan favorite just like Kick Ass before it. Vaughn and Goodman's humor & ultraviolence blend well and will appeal to recent wave of Anglophile/Brit nostalgia and geek fandom that includes Shawn of the Dead, Sherlock, Dr.Who and Downton Abbey.
The breakfast took place at the appropriately named Big Daddy's Diner on Park Ave and 20th Street in New York City.
While we chatted with Matthew Vaughn I took some video which I have edited and included below. The sound of the video is not that great - apologies - but listen closely and you should hear what he says.
He talked about the differences between America and England, what inspired him to make the film, why he changed the plot slightly from the comic book, Samuel L Jackson's performance, Colin Firth's action training and the trouble with studios. If you can persevere with the background noise it's a great conversation.
It was a real pleasure to talk to Matthew but also to meet my fellow writers and other bloggers, comic book store owners etc. at the breakfast. What a great idea to do something like this!
Kingsman: The Secret Service starring Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Samuel L Jackson, Taron Egerton and Mark Strong is out in theaters on February 13th, 2015.
