It's been one of the most intriguing potential castings of recent years - but could Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto really be joining the cast of DC's Suicide Squad...as The Joker?
Well, unlikely as it may seem - I think most of us had assumed that The Joker would be taking an extended sabbatical after Heath Ledger's iconic performance in The Dark Knight - it looks as though it might actually happen.
Or, rather, Leto himself is making it sound an awful lot like he might be in talks to appear in the movie as the Clown Prince of Crime. The actor was interviewed by MTV recently, and his response when asked whether he'd be playing The Joker was...complicated:
"Y'know there's a film called Fight Club, my friend, and you know what the first rule is, don't you? Enough said."
Well, it doesn't take being Tyler Durden to figure out the answer to that question...
You Don't. Talk. About. Fight Club.
Which seems to suggest that there's something to the story - but that Leto just can't talk about it. Especially since he followed it up with:
"Y'know, I've been reading scripts...I'm not really in a hurry to jump into another film, unless it's something that I absolutely can't say no to. Y'know, I want to make sure it's special."
Even if Leto is in talks to play the iconic villain though, there's still one big question to answer:
Would Jared Leto Make a Good Joker?
Well, that's ultimately a decision we each have to make for ourselves - but it seems to me that he's got a couple of key things going for him...
1. Leto's Got the Looks
I mean, just look at him - you could scar the hell out of that face, and he'd still dominate any room you put him in.
Also, as Heath Ledger proved, there's something extra-awesome about getting an extremely handsome person to play a horribly disfigured psychopath.
2. Leto's Got the Acting Chops
See: Dallas Buyers Club, The. Also, that whole Oscar thing.
3. Leto Can Bring the Creepy
Just look into his eyes, and ask yourself - "You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?"
4. Leto'll Do Whatever It Takes to Make the Role His Own
Again, see: Dallas Buyers Club, The. Specifically, all the weight loss.
5. Leto Gets the Mystery
Specifically, that the greatest thing about The Joker is the fact that we know so little about him. One of the key reasons Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight was so incredible was that Ledger understood that the Joker has to be a mysterious agent of chaos who you can never quite figure out, to be as completely terrifying (and awesome) as he can be.
And, from the sounds of that interview, Leto totally gets that too...
So, y'know what - I actually bet Leto'd make a pretty awesome Joker.
The biggest question of all, though, is this:
What do you guys think?
Would Jared Leto make a good Joker?
