Dragon Ball: Xenoverse will be released on February 5th for Xbox One and PS4. This means that fans don't have too long to wait in order to discover whether their beloved series has transferred over to NextGen consoles with style. We're all familiar with the inherent lack that has permeated throughout the recent Dragon Ball games, but I feel like this could be a great game if it implemented the right features.

I'm sure many of you feel as if the days of glory for Dragon Ball games has long since past, but have faith dear friends, there may be a bit of hope with this one!

Will Dragon Ball Z Fans Like Dragon Ball: Xenoverse?

One of the main reasons that Dragon Ball games have failed in recent years is because of their blatant refusal to include all of the other aspects of the DB universe that fans love. Sure the fighting is awesome, but even some games haven't given us a great feeling of control over the characters. But aside from this combat, what else do these games have going for them? We don't feel invested in anything.

These games certainly includes a bunch of the series' most famous characters, but where is the heart? Where are the interesting narratives and all of the other details that make Dragon Ball such a famous and well respected series? Let's take a look at Dragon Ball: Xenoverse's plot and see whether the developers have finally taken this into account after many years.

Dragon Ball: Xenoverse Plot

The Dragon Ball series has released some truly excellent games over the years, though the best games existed on our PS2, Super Famicom and Gameboy consoles in my opinion. They all respected the series and tied it's story in well with the rest of the world, and of course the combat was awesome.

Unlike the previous games of the series that usually follow the original Dragon Ball canon, Xenoverse will feature an entire new story. The 2014 V-Jump #7, which announces the game, draws attention to a mysterious figure watching the first battle between Goku and Vegeta from the shadows. With red hair, a scouter, and the Capsule Corporation logo on his sleeve, this character's identity was not clear, though we now know it was player created.

Personally, I think that it's great that the game is trying to distinguish itself from the series and come up with its own unique ideas and characters! This lends it the ability to attract Dragon Ball Z fans to its world so they can experience something new, just through a video game. Though it's not only new settings and characters, we still get our two fan favourites that I mentioned above and a whole lot more!

Another returning character is Time Patrol Trunks from Dragon Ball Online, who makes a full playable appearance. Two new areas are also showcased: a completely new Hyperbolic Time Chamber like area named the Time Storage Vault, and the other being a high-tech city with what appears to be a Time Machine landed on it. The story is revealed to be about mysterious forces manipulating history, with the player being tasked with restoring the timeline.

But surely, the ability to create your own character is the highlight of this experience. What a great addition to the world. But what would you love to see in an ideal world?

Open World Dragon Ball Z

With open world games becoming a bit of an insane craze at the moment, with the likes of Zelda and Metal Gear Solid moving in this direction, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work for Dragon Ball! Imagine getting to fly around Toriyama's world, completely free of boundaries?! Now that's a Dragon Ball game I'd look forward to.
