Director of the upcoming film, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon revealed that this sequel will dance around a general philosophy which is, “death, death and more death” – This revelation has left fans kind of worried. For many fans, this worry was significantly amplified when the official trailers were released to the whole world. Many have speculated that we may witness the death of one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! As we slowly approach the day that the Avengers assemble once more on the big screen, we can only guess at which of our heroes will go. In the following I will be sharing my opinion on the demise of one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes…

So who could it be… Tony Stark? Thor? Black Widow? Hawkeye? Hulk? Or….. Captain America? I personally believe that if we see any of the Avengers die In Age of Ultron, it would most likely be Captain America and here’s why…

Captain America Dies in the Comic Books

The most obvious reason is that Captain America does die in the comics! In fact, the story of Captain America’s death was an 18 issue story arc that first appears in Captain America (vol. 5) #25 and continues to issue #42. The first issue, #25, was the highest selling comic for the month of its release! The Death of Captain America story arc had a huge impact on the entire Marvel Universe and was even followed up with a miniseries, Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America. However, in the comic books, this story arc is introduced after the Civil War. So Cap might be safe… For now. Or is he?

Footnote: The next Captain America film title is Civil War, could we see him die in the third Captain America installment?

The Iconic Broken Shield: Bad Omen?

So even though in the comic books, the death of Captain America occurs after the Civil War; there is still the question, “What on Earth could have broken his shield?!” – Let’s look at the history of Captain America’s shield. His shield was created by Dr. Myron MacLain, well sort of by accident. According to comics, he actually fell asleep during the construction of the shield, so it was like one of those wonderful accidents. Captain America’s shield is composed of a unique alloy of Vibranium, steel, and an unknown third component. The composition of his shield makes it virtually indestructible, as we seen when Thor brought his hammer down on it in Marvel’s The Avengers. According to the comic books, the only way to actually damage Captain America’s shield is to somehow tamper with its molecular bonding. So what could have broken his shield in the upcoming [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035)? I think that the broken shield is an iconic sign that Captain America, Steve Rogers will surely die.

Introduction of the Winter Soldier

The introduction of the Winter Soldier in the second installment of the Captain America film series has to be one of the biggest Easter Eggs in Marvel to date. According to the comic books, when Steve Rogers dies, Bucky Barns AKA Winter Soldier takes up Steve’s shield and assumes the role of Captain America. Captain America has had many foes and adversaries in the Marvel Universe, so why introduce Winter Soldier so soon if not to have Captain America eventually die?

So it does seem like that the odds are stacked against Captain America going into Age of Ultron; even considering that Captain America doesn’t die in the comic books until after the Civil War. It’s no secret that Marvel Studios will, at times, switch things up a bit. That said, we will more than likely see the death of Steve Rogers in Age of Ultron, and his return from the dead (as it happened in comic books) in [Captain America: Civil War](movie:994409). It surely wouldn’t be the first time that Marvel Studios has lead us to believe a key character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is dead. Cough, cough – Nick Fury – cough – Agent Coulson – Cough, cough.
