Update! As many of the commenters have pointed out, this footage has now been debunked. This is not the actual footage you're looking for!
With all the rumors floating around about when we will - finally - get to see the first trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Galaxy Far Far Away-related excitement levels are pretty darned high right now.
As in, higher up than Cloud City kind of high.
It might be this week, it might be at Christmas-time, or it might be almost anywhere - but there's one thing for sure, our first real, honest to goodness, no foolin' look at Episode VII - its first teaser - is on its way, and, presumably, set to be as awesome as we all assume.
And, then, this happened:
Yup, that's footage of The Millennium Falcon. Flying at the camera. Which we've never seen before.
That, if Making Star Wars is to be believed, is totally from the upcoming Episode VII.
Cue Ewok celebration:
The only problem?
The Gif May Not Be Real
After all, there's no shortage of awesome graphical wizards on the internet, and all kinds of reasons why someone might want to come up with a fake version of this exact thing, at this exact time. That would also explain why the graphics look a little less polished than you'd expect from our first look at a sequel trilogy Millennium Falcon.
There are, though, three factors that may suggest it might just actually be for real:
1. It Matches Up With Earlier Rumors
Or rather, it syncs up perfectly with the recent report on Badass Digest that suggested Episode VII's trailer would end with "the Millennium Falcon, firing blasters, coming right at the camera."
2. It Looks Totally J.J. Abrams
Two words: Lens. Flare.
3. It Comes Complete With Super-Nerdy Details
Specifically, the radar dish over on the right there. Which is noticeably rectangular, as opposed to the traditional circle. Which, a) syncs up with the fact that the Falcon lost its dish during the Battle of Endor, and b) matches this reportedly leaked image:
Which means, odds are, the Millenium Falcon is set to appear with a new radar dish.
So, Is It Real?
Well, we almost certainly won't know for sure until the actual trailer - and possibly even the full movie - arrives, but it certainly seems to be a legitimate possibility.
Sure, it may not be the slickest, but that could easily be the result of the gif-ification process, or a low quality copy having been leaked. Similarly, while many people could have made it, it shows an attention to detail that seems to suggest a Lucasfilm hand in it.
Which, for me at least, is why I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
But then again, that might just be because I want to see the 'Falcon again so frakking much...
What do you guys think, though?
Is the new Falcon gif for real?
