When the official title for the seventh installment of Star Wars, The Force Awakens, was announced at the beginning of the month, it marked the start of the new era for Star Wars. It was the first leak in the dam holding back a tidal wave of information on multiple films coming to theaters for years to come. So with that being said, it's about time we start sharing some of the info that is flooding in.
According to a report by Slashfilm, they have uncovered the story behind the first spin-off film in the Star Wars universe to be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla). In May, Lucasfilm announced that the director of Godzilla was hired and beginning work on a story taking place parallel to the main story. The rumors are that this will be a heist film in the vein of The Dirty Dozen, in space. The main players will be bounty hunters who are hired by the Rebels to steal the blueprints to the Death Star. Judging solely by the description, it would seem that the events of the film would be right before or during the events of A New Hope.
This story opens itself up to being a fantastic companion piece to the original trilogy. It is understandable why Edwards was so enthused by the project. He is getting the opportunity to play in the sandbox that he has familiarized himself with for over thirty years. Slashfilm theorizes that Boba Fett would have to be a featured player, as he has been shown to be one of the supreme bounty hunters in the original trilogy. They also reveal that the spin-off will be directly connected to Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens, as the protagonist of the spin-off will be introduced (presumably in his or her old age) in the upcoming film.
It would seem a certainty that characters such as Darth Vader would have to appear in the movie. Slashfilm also reports that the Millenium Falcon will be involved in the plot somehow, without the presence of Han Solo. What is less certain is how the story will play out. By their very nature, bounty hunters are not aligned with the Empire or the Rebel Alliance. They work for Team Cash. If bounty hunters that we already have seen, such as Boba Fett, are part of a heist to steal the Death Star's blueprints, wouldn't Vader be able to sense the betrayal? Or perhaps that could be what is used to create tension in the movie. There are numerous questions to be answered, however, that is all part of the fun. Also it is yet to be seen how this film will distinguish itself from the [Suicide Squad](movie:2283363), which will have a similar set-up and cast of wild characters releasing the same year.
