Hey Jurassic World fans! That trailer was amazing wasn’t it? It wasn’t enough that the film is one of my most anticipated films of 2015, but the trailer added the extra umph! Now that there is a lot to speculate from this trailer; besides the already released synopsis, that gave some plot away. Before we begin let us refresh the basic plot of the film.
“Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. This new park is owned by the Masrani Corporation. Owen (Chris Pratt), a member of [Jurassic World](movie:32752)'s on-site staff, conducts behavioral research on the Velociraptors, but things go awry when the research team accidentally unleashes a genetically-modified hybrid dinosaur into the park.”
After seeing the trailer multiple times today, I started to have this thought in my mind about Chris Pratt’s Owen more than any other character. Even after seeing what he is appears to be racing with the Velociraptors on his motorcycle at the end of the trailer, Owen seems a little suspicious to me. It looks like he is training them or studying the dinos for research, but I thought that there is more than that for some reason. As a filmmaker and film fan I guess I have a natural instinct to speculate and dive into the story as much as I can and I have to say that I believe that Owen may be the anti-hero. Granted all we got was a teaser trailer that was more for the visuals above anything else. But I still think there is more to the characters than the film has teased us with so far. “You just went and made a new dinosaur? Probably not a good idea” says Owen from the film.
For those of you that have not yet seen the trailer (shame on you) let’s clarify what he’s talking about. The scientists on Jurassic World have created a genetically modified dinosaur. Meaning, that they had successfully bread to species together making a brand new one. To me, Owen seems like a person who is fascinated and has grown to love these creatures. It could indeed be that he is secretly racing the Velociraptors secretly. Granted it is nighttime and it looks like to be an hour where the park would be closed. The point is, is not only has he grown an attachment with the creatures, but he might very well be furious that the Jurassic World Corporation has not yet learned of the consequences of messing with nature. Again, this is all speculation.
I have no doubt that Owen has a major contribution to the plot of Jurassic World. But he might be just one of the side characters. If you remember, in the beginning of the trailer Judy Greer is sending off, what appear to be her children, Grey (Ty Simpkins) and Zach (Nick Robinson) off to Jurassic World on a camp or a simple brotherly bonding trip. I have a feeling that the for-front of the film will be about the two boys and Owen’s story will be on it’s own until they potentially cross paths. But the trailer never showed the three characters interacting at all. The only other person besides the dinosaurs that Owen interacts with is Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), and scientist at Jurassic World that helped create the genetically modified dinosaur.
So why do I think Owen might be the anti-hero in the film? As I stated before, he might be angry at the fact that the park scientists have not yet learned about the consequences of controlling nature and that they might be also killing off the non mutated species in the park. If Owen were indeed attached to these animals then he would have to feel some level of protection over the dinosaurs that were naturally bred in the lab. I think he will have a huge part in the climax of the film when they are battling the genetically modified dinosaur, which is seen chasing him in the trailer. But I think he could be the anti-hero everyone loves. The story could be about this guy, Owen, who doesn’t “love” the dinosaurs at first. He might be training them as just a “job”. But then he might grow to have a fondness for them through discovering about their intelligence, which is why the climax might be the highlight of the film.
The climax might involve Owen confronting the head of Jurassic World (Irrfan Khan) in a violent matter in trying to save the rest of the species after they kill the genetically modified dinosaur, rather then killing them off in fear. Owen even states in the trailer that “She’s a highly intelligent animal” most likely referring to the new cross bread dinosaur. Since the rest of the dinosaurs at the park have been somewhat genetically bread in the labs of Jurassic World, they must have a pretty high IQ, close to the newly bread animal. And if they indeed have this high level of intelligence that might mean that they will not just be attacking the humans in instinctual survival. They might want to slaughter the humans for abusing them in the park for so long. Because, if you remember, this story takes place 20 years after the first film and it would have taken a long time to re-bread the dinosaurs, including the never before witnessed ones. Like the water creature that looks like it lives in a giant Sea World looking exhibit in the park.
So that pretty much sums up my thoughts on Owen in Jurassic World. I still believe that there is more to him than meets the eye; even in the eventual second official trailer we get to see. But I want to know what do you fans think. Do you guys think I have hit some major points about Owen that you agree with or disagree with? Are there any points that you might have on Owen’s character that might add to this discussion? Whatever you think; comment below, let me know!
