I've been a fan of the Hunger Games ever since the first film came out. After seeing the trailer and hearing it was based on a book, I had to read it. I have this thing where I HAVE to read the book that the film is based on before I go see the film. So after reading it and seeing the film, I was hooked! I moved on to Catching Fire and then finally Mockingjay, then felt a hole in my heart when it was over. Is there a word for that?
So when the Mockingjay—Part 1 film was announced, I was ecstatic! I went to the film premiere at Harkins in the state of Arizona, prepared to be amazed! My expectations were fulfilled. However I and other HG fans have noted how Mockingjay lacks action. But seeing as how this is the first part of the final installment, I didn't expect them to have all the super action-y parts in the first act.
Part 1 was just the beginning, the lead-up to something greater—Part 2. The first act draws you in, and the second act brings it home! But what can we expect from the final film in the Hunger Games series? Well for one thing, war. I read Mockingjay and finished a few months before the film came out. I was actually not expecting them to reach the part they ended with; Peeta and the others are rescued from the Capitol's clutches. Unfortunately, Peeta's been brainwashed by the Capitol in to believing that Katniss is the enemy; and upon their reunion, he tries to choke the life out of her.
I thought they would leave that big reveal for the second film, but I'm glad they ended on it. They filmed all of the dramatic "war preparation scenes" for Part 1, leaving Part 2 to be all about action! Be prepared for a ton of intense and loud scenes!
After a victory at District 2 (thanks to Gale and a controversial strategy) the rebels are ready to launch a final attack against the Capitol. But as Katniss grows more and more rebellious and uncontrollable, Coin wants her dead. This is pretty evident when Coin sends Katniss and her propo team (which features Game of Thrones Natalie Dormer as Cressida in what I believe to be the most perfect casting choice since Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Katniss!) on a mission alongside the still very unstable Peeta.
So look forward to a lot of Katniss/Coin conflict in Part 2. I personally think that Coin finds Katniss so hard to control because Katniss is, in a lot of ways, just like her. A strong woman with a rebellious attitude and a heart full of courage, bravery and the willpower to fight for what she believes in. Coin sees a lot of herself in Katniss, which is what scares her the most; she doesn't want Katniss overpowering her.
The second half of Mockingjay won't just feature some Coin on Katniss rivalry however, it will also feature: death, death and more death. If you thought Part 1 was sad, with the destruction of District 12 and the unhappy reunion between power couple Katniss and Peeta, then you might want to seriously mentally prepare yourself for Part 2. Without naming names here (don't want to get to spoiler-y) a lot of people, some of them notable characters, die sad and traumatic deaths during the war between the Districts in the Capitol. Which is to be expected, after all you can't have a war as magnifying as this and not expect a few gut-wrenching, heart-breaking fatalities.
But just how emotional will these deaths be? Well remember the final act of the final Harry Potter book/film? Yeah, that emotional (If you haven't read/watched Deathly Hallows, I implore you to read/watch it now! Unless your busy..then a little later!)
The one thing I'll fear they'll do is cut scenes. I know it's going to happen; they'll have to cut some moments from the book out of the movie in order to save time. I just hope they don't cut anything important out. I noticed they cut some moments out of Part 1, but it wasn't anything too big. They also re-worked some scenes. Like when Katniss was reading her list of demands. In the book, she mentions not only the freedom of her fellow tributes (and that Prim gets to keep her vicious demon cat, Buttercup.) but also that she and Gale get to hunt for a certain amount of time everyday. Though they do get to hunt, the movie glosses over her ever demanding it and plays it off like Coin was simply doing Katniss a solid. But all we know Coin wouldn't give Katniss...a dime!
Though they'll most certainly leave out some scenes to spare time; I am confident they'll keep the important stuff in. After all, this is the last film in what is known as the bestselling franchise today! Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 2 is going to be chock full of action, drama and sadness! So when the time comes, make sure you, your popcorn and your reasonably priced drink are strapped in tightly for this joyride of emotions!
All good things must come to an end, but Mockingjay is going to go out with a huge bang that's sure to light up theaters and audiences across the globe. I can't wait to see Katniss' final adventure when Mockingjay—Part 2 releases next year on November 20th! Get ready fellow Tributes, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
