When State of Decay debuted on Xbox Live last June, it broke a number of genre gameplay conventions: characters die permanently, story progression isn’t pre-scripted, and the world continues to change even when players are offline. Fans responded enthusiastically to this “zombie survival fantasy” spin on the genre, ensuring a bright future for the State of Decay franchise.
So what’s next for State of Decay? In Spring 2015, Xbox One owners will have the opportunity to experience the definitive version of State of Decay with the Year One Survival Edition.
First, State of Decay is being remastering in glorious 1080p, with sharper textures, a refined user interface, and more environment detail. With the more powerful hardware Undead Labs are quite simply able to do 'more'. Denser wildlife growth, deeper aesthetics for characters and zombies alike, more zombies and more individual personalities within the zombie hordes.
Not an entire DLC’s worth, but a few cool new mission types, new weapons, vehicles, and perhaps a hero or two. Even some of your favorite characters from Lifeline (yes, Sasquatch) will be available as playable characters in Breakdown, and taking some of the new base options from Lifeline and making them available in Breakdown and the core State of Decay game.
Both Breakdown and Lifeline DLC releases will come as standard already in the game to create the ultimate State of Decay experience.
There will also be half an hour of new music from State of Decay composer Jesper Kyd.
State of Decay Year One Survival edition is already up and running on Xbox One and apparently:
"It already looks fantastic", but we still have a long way to go to make the visual improvements worthy of Xbox One hardware. We’ll crank on that through the fall, and plan to release State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition, both digitally on Xbox One and PC/Steam, and at retail, in spring 2015."
For those of you who’ve played State of Decay, I know you’ll have lots of questions. Will my characters transfer over? What is the upgrade path for current players? Have the system specs for the PC changed? How much will it cost?
"I don’t have answers to these questions today, but rest assured we’re working on them, and I’ll let you know as soon as I can. What I can tell you is that we’re always aware the reason we have the opportunity to continue making State of Decay games is because of your support, and that will guide every decision we make." Probably the closest you can get to The Walking Dead TV series that a game can get. State of Decay focuses on survival tactics: stealth, evasion, distractions, base building, survivor community, securing resources, and moving through the world more than actual zombie combat. The game is in an open world, where the player's choices are an important factor.
Players are able to choose from a large variety of locations to build a base in. Structures such as watch towers, gardens, sleeping quarters, kitchens, workshops, medical bays, and barricades can be constructed to defend against the infected population, help survivors recover faster, and build explosives and other tools.
Food, medicine, shelter, ammo, and construction materials are necessary for survival and should be used wisely. To obtain these supplies, the player will need to go on raids to abandoned supermarkets and many other locations, although food can be grown at the base. The player can also find other groups of survivors that are willing to trade their resources with the player, in exchange for ammunition.
The player will be able to rescue other AI survivors to help with defense, build facilities, and repair cars/guns (with the appropriate facilities). They can also be sent out to loot, find a new base location, or to come pick up supplies found by the player. If one was to get enough supplies they are able to craft items like a homemade suppressor but has to wait 30 real world minutes while it is being made.
The player starts out as a character named Marcus Campbell; A store clerk who is an athlete and a born leader. Returning from a fishing trip at Mt. Tanner with his friend, Ed Jones, he finds that the world has degenerated into a zombie apocalypse.
Upon reaching the ranger station, the two encounter Thomas Ritter and a small group of survivors. While searching the area for supplies and survivors, Marcus and Ed hear gunshots and rescue Maya Torres, a soldier. Returning to the ranger station they find that one of the survivors has turned and killed the others. Ed searches Thomas Ritter's body and is attacked and bitten in the progress; he does however find a walkie-talkie which the trio use to talk to Thomas' daughter Lily.
Lily directs them in escaping Mt. Tanner and making their way to a church called the Church of the Ascension, where she and several other survivors have made a home base. The rest of the story is for you to find out and for to to survive as long as you can!
State of Decay Year One Survival Edition will be rolling out next year onto Xbox One and PC.
