The long in development hell sequel, 18 years to be precise, to Independence Day 2 is finally in the works, with 20th Century Fox set to begin filming next May for a June 2016 release date.

Details on the sequel are few and far between at the moment, but it is believed that Roland Emmerich (White House Down) will return to direct, as will his producing partner Dean Devlin.

What's interesting however, is that original star Will Smith will not return for more alien ass kicking action. It is not known why Smith has declined to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller, but the source here suggests that Fox and Emmerich would write his character back in if Smith did finally say yes.

Once Fox confirm Emmerich is on board they will begin the casting process, and begin shooting in May 2015. Quite what the plot or official title will be is anyone's guess, but I hope it's better than ID4 2.
