To those who get confused about what is owned by what Movie studio involving Marvel because in the 90's Marvel sold their property to movies studios because they were broke. I will try to make things a little clearer, although not being someone who is behind the scenes at Marvel I still know which properties fall under.
First up Lets get the obvious ones out the way.
Now obvious to all Marvel fanboys and some non ones this is owned by Fox,But the details of what they own are like this anyone in the Marvel who is a mutant or who is deeply rooted in their story of X-men may fall under the legal agreement between them and Fox, these characters such as Deadpool, the Shi'ar,Cable and The X-Factor and etc. This means characters such as Apocalypse or Magneto suddenly can't just appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe without Fox's approval of how Marvel portrayed that character. In fact the word mutant is owned by Fox and if Marvel say it within Film or Tv series such as Agents Of Shield, Fox will sue the hell out of them. The only characters that are in both Fox and Marvel are
But Marvel can't mention who their dad is ..
Another one of Fox's Properties is Marvel's oldest superhero team consisting of Reed Richards aka Mr Fantastic, Sue Storm (Richards) aka The Invisble Woman, her brother Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch and Ben Grimm aka The Thing.
Now I don't want get into the controversy over race swapping characters in Hollywood which is a scheme to get that demographic to watch that film or the altered story of making one of Marvel's best villains into a Keyboard Killer. because we can go back and forth, which then i could say you should want to fail then Fox won't want to make another one and it might go straight back to Marvel.
Anyway they are owned by Fox as well as some of their spin off characters such as;
No space clouds please Fox or whatever that crap was.
and The Skulls
Which is why we got those I can't believe there not Skrull version the Chitauri in Avengers Marvel Cinematic Universe ,but bear in mind that they are important part of secret wars story and others but like I said they could easily use the Chitauri as they have the same abilities as the Skulls and were created for that purpose see below
With only one major Marvel character Sony doesn't have the luxury of having many characters to spin off like Fox or Marvel and only have anything under the character
Now that pretty simple all his side characters such as Jonah Jameson, Gwen Stacy ,Harry Osborn, Aunty May who may have her own movie (ROFL) seriously and many others supporting characters. Then the other superheroes in his franchise such as Black Cat,Silver Sable,Firestar, The Prowler and Rocket Racer. And some of his enemies such as Green Goblin,Venom,Doctor Octopus,Rhino,Electro although hoping they let Marvel have Morbius as it would be weird to have him in their franchise and is suited more for Midnight Son's
But this is where the confusing part comes for people, is over
The confusion is that because her name is Spider-Woman people think that Sony own the rights which is incorrect as she has nothing to do with Peter Parker or his world until late in the comics in fact they don't share anything but the name Spider the same goes for the second Spider-Woman
Like Jessica they have no association with Spider-Man but the Avengers which means they both fall under Marvel's Cinematic Universe and not Sony's and because the good relationship between Sony and Marvel Studios they most likely have worked out a deal where both Juila Carpenter and Jessica Drew are called Arachne or Madame Webb instead or that they can use the name. Although that is the scenario Peter Parker has had Women who have taken up the name Spider-Woman or girl in his universe such as
But these characters come well after Peter Parker when in his retirement state except Silk.
Last but definitely not least is Marvel Studios, now under the Disney umbrella like Star Wars, Disney gave them their created freedom and in that freedom have created a shared universe which every Tom,Dick and Harry studio wants to replicate but is getting out of hand as James Gunn said. While Marvel as a live action studios don't own all Marvel character in the animation world they own all their characters so they can make an X-men and Spider-man cartoon if they wanted and Fox and Sony can't do anything about it .But the Cinematic Universe has practically ever Marvel character under its belt and yes this includes Namor the Sub Mariner who they still might have to give Universal Distribution rights as Kevin Feige stated in an interview with IGN.
I hope this has cleared up some confusion for some but others I know your gonna bombard me with messages that this post is not stating anything new but then don't explain to people who's got what
