The teaser for Star Wars The Force Awakens has gotten the internet a-buzzing, whether it is love or hate. Fans are wondering so many things and are coming out with so many predictions...well I guess I'll joint he bandwagon and give my own hopes and theories about this sequel.
First off there is John Boyega in the middle of a possible (and more than likely) Tattooine dune.
First thing I notice is that he is wearing very classic looking Stormtrooper armor and I'm already happy. Now some people have been confused and questioning, "I thought the Stormtroopers were all clones of Jango Fett. What's going on?" Well if you rewatch the original trilogy, each Stormtrooper had a different voice from the other so they weren't clones. My guess is that after the Empire grew larger and bought more systems, they changed back to enlistments and so loyal Imperials became soldiers AKA Stormtroopers. Some theorize that we will be seeing the story of a loyal Imperial go from Stormtrooper to Alliance hero throughout the film and I actually like that angle if that is true. It will allow us to see that maybe there is good on both sides, just that Imperials are led by evil men. Maybe in that sense we will even see an evil on the Alliance side. It's a good theory. It reminds me a lot of a certain character from the Jedi Knight games. I will talk more about him later. Another question is, "Will Boyega's character be One with the Force or will he be the next Han Solo/Lando Calrissian character?" Personally I hope he is a Jedi candidate for a reason I'll say later. He seems shocked in the trailer and the way he looks around makes me think a few things:
- 1. After a battle against Alliance he blacked out in the desert and so his battalion continued on thinking he was dead.
- 2. This is after he decided to go rogue from the Rebellion and so the villain leaves him here to suffer and die.
- 3. He fell from his transport and now he needs to find his squadron.
My mind leans more toward the first one.
Next there is the quick shot of a new kind of android:
That thing is...adorable. Star Wars is a kid's franchise and I think something like that is perfect for kids. Plus I do think the design is awesome. My guess is that this droid belongs to a character coming up. That's really all I have to say about him.
The way how this shot is filmed, it is focused on the third trooper which leaves me to think that that one is Boyega's character but I could be wrong. I can't deny though that the new helmets actually look better than the original designs. This also shows my theory that the Empire went for enlistments since each Trooper here has a different height. Either that or he's whispering something into the guy's ear...
I'm curious as to how much of the life of a Stormtrooper we'll see. Will we see the boot camp? The interaction between troopers? Will we see them actually hit their target?
Some jokes are worth it.
Daisy Ridley's character is still somewhat of a mystery. I hope she is the daughter of either Luke Skywalker or Leia Skywalker (more hope for Luke's daughter); we need to continue the story of that family...and try to erase Hayden Christensen from out memory banks. Her outfit in this shot here reminds me of what Luke was wearing when he first appeared in Empire Strikes Back. Was that intentional? I don't know, knowing Abrams' awesome nerdiness it might be.
Her character does seem to be running away from something. My guess is that since she is on Tattooine here and so was Boyega, that his squadron was after her and so she bolted. She doesn't appear to be a Jedi here, especially with that weapon and the vehicle she uses.
I think she is more of a smuggler character, hinting towards more of a Solo child but she could just be a smuggler Skywalker because she never became a Jedi like her father. With her being in the desert like this, it sort of sets up the pairing of Daisy and Boyega and she shows his character that the men that run the Empire are evil, so later he changes sides.
Next we see an Alliance pilot in his cockpit played by one of my new favorite actors: Oscar Isaac. First thing I notice is that the helmet does look different but it's a good different. Thirty years have passed so I'm not surprised things have changed. Ever since I heard Isaac was cast in the film, I have been very curious as to who he will play and then I came to a theory after seeing the teaser. Earlier I said that if my theory about Boyega's character is correct then he will have a similar story to another character from the Star Wars expanded-universe and that character is Kyle Katarn. For anybody who hasn't played Dark Forces, Jedi Knight Dark Forces II, and Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast I will just say that you should because Kyle Katarn is one of the greatest Star Wars characters ever made. When I look at Oscar Isaac, I can actually see him in the role of Kyle Katarn.
Kyle Katarn didn't always have facial hair, in Dark Forces he was clean shaven. Although the story of the Jedi Knight games take place only a couple years after Return of the Jedi, the games don't count as canon so he could change it to fit this story. I don't deny that it's improbable that Isaac is Katarn but if it is, it could lead to a great story where Boyega's character is lost and doesn't know what to do now that he knows the Empire is evil. Just then, an ex-Stormtrooper named Kyle gives an uplifting speech to Boyega. Again, yes very unlikely but a fan can dream can't he? Speaking of pilot Oscar Isaac...
Here, I'm curious about something. These X-Wings look very dirty and gritty, like they've been through a lot. I wonder if they are heading TO battle or running away FROM battle. I mean the formation they are in suggests more that they are heading into battle but I was curious.
Now we get to the part that everyone is asking/talking about: the Sith. First off the way he walks up looks threatening and then he equips his lightsaber in less than a second and igniting it. He just looks like someone I don't want to mess with. Oh yeah, there's something: a lot of people are hating on this lightsaber because of the cross-guard hilt. Personally I love it. I love when Star Wars resembles more of a fantasy world than sci-fi, so seeing the sword like look of this saber makes me happy.
Am I the only one who's noticed that the blade looks different from most light sabers? It sorts pulsates and moves as if it is unstable. Maybe this Sith used a different kind of crystal or new means to create a blade. Some have suggested that the cross-guard blades are not blades but exhausts to keep the lightsaber from exploding. I think they are just small blades to keep the hilt from being destroyed. I also think the hate is going to fade; everyone despised the idea of a double-bladed lightsaber for Darth Maul but it turns out everyone loved it.
I have a question: Why did he draw his Lightsaber? My theory is that there is a Jedi in that forest he's about to duke it out with, and he can sense it.
Then there is the voice of (possibly and more than likely) the villain. I've seen many immediately blurt out: "CUMBERBATCH! IT'S CUMBERBATCH!" And I immediately respond to that with, "How?" It doesn't sound anything like him except for the fact that it's a deep voice. Some theorized that his casting was kept secret until this trailer and I respectfully disagree. The other two ideas are Max Von Sydow but the accent isn't right but myself and a few others have called this voice out to be the third one: Andy Serkis. It was already confirmed he was in the film and the voice sounds almost exact to Caesar from Dawn/Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Personally, I think Andy Serkis as a Sith is phenomenal casting, I would love to see this guy play a pure evil man ready to take on the Jedi.
And then we hear the villains voice say, "...And the light..."
CUE JOHN WILLIAMS SCORE AND EPIC FLIGHT OF MILLENNIUM FALCON THEN SHOW US THE LOGO WITH THE THEME CONTINUING TO PLAY! There...the Nostalgia Bomb has officially blown up.
TIE Fighters, the sound effects, the John Williams score, the Falcon. It's just so warm and fuzzy with nostalgia.
I do wonder who is piloting the Falcon here. Is it Han Solo saving the lives of our main characters? Is it Ridley's character piloting the ship she got from her uncle or father? Is it a renewed Falcon that Ridley found destroyed and rebuilt? Who knows? IT'S JUST AWESOME!
So that's my breakdown of and many theories and hopes that come from this teaser. Quickly I want to give my hopes on a few other things about this movie and one of them is about the first trailer to come in a few months. Most big trailers leave something big and epic to reveal, well I hope in the film that big and epic scene is this,
"A white cloaked figured walks up to a multitude of Stormtroopers who aim their blasters at said figure. One yells, "Hands up!" The figure reaches up and lowers the hood revealing an aged Queen Leia who sends a force push knocking many back. This causes the troopers to begin firing but within less than a second, Leia ignites a yellow bladed lightsaber and deflects a few blasts." End of Trailer Scene
Shorten it maybe to just Leia igniting her lightsaber if that's too much to reveal but you get the idea.
The other hope for this movie is that, I really hope they show us the Force crystal mines and the construction of lightsabers. That's right plural, for I want all three of the characters played by Boyega, Ridley, and Isaac to become THREE Jedi and take on the one Sith at once.
So what are your thoughts on my article? Sorry for it being so long. Did you like it or hate it? Do you like my ideas or am I an idiot? Let me know in the comments below!
