Today is a very sad day for the entire Hispanic community. One of our long time comedic legends of the screen and overall saint of a man Roberto Gómez Bolaños, has passed away at the age of 85. "Chespirito" died of a heart attack and his passing ocurred on Friday, November 28th.
Roberto Gómez Bolaños was an extremely famous Mexican writer and actor known worldwide for his colorful and hilarious original characters "El Chavo del 8" and "El Chapulín Colorado." He was born in Mexico City Feb. 21, 1929.
I personally grew up with this man as did many other Meixican and Latin children around the world for the last 40 years. Who could forget the only real MEXICAN superhero we ever got, even if was meant for slapstick comedy "El Chapulin Colorado" is still taken very seriously by its legion of fans. After given an exclusive contract in 1968 with Mexican television station Telemuñdo, Roberto began his long run of Saturday morning variety comedy show where he honed his skills as an improv actor. His extreamly quick wit made for some very memorable TV moments not to mention the endless amount of quotes left behind by this legend. The show was such a hit, it was then moved to Monday nights where the show went on to become a cultural legend! Roberto Gómez Bolaños, was then known worldwide mainly for his characters "El Chavo del 8" and "El Chapulín Colorado." "El Chavo del 8" seems to have been his most recognized character. In the sketch Roberto, would play a homeless kid that lives in a barrel in the middle of an apartment complex. Fast talking hilarious neighbors like La Chilindrina, Don Ramón, Doña Florinda, Quico, Jaimito El Cartero and La Bruja Del 71 are engraved not only in Mexican culture but throughout Latin America. The show ran for 25 years but reruns are always broadcasted with constant high ratings. In recent years "El Chavo" the animated series was created and went on to be just as successful, there is also a toy-line and most recently a go-kart video game.
To show how popular 'Chespirito' was. He opened a Twitter account in 2011 with the message: "Hello. I'm Chespirito. I'm 82-years-old and this is the first time I tweet. This is my debut. All the good people, follow me!" In two months, he had 1 million followers. By the time of his passing, there are 6.6 million and growing!!
Past works include early writing gigs for "Cómicos y Canciones" and "El Estudio De Pedro Vargas." Also very successful in theate. In 1992 he produced, directed and acted in "11 and 12," the story for adults of a man who loses his genitals in an accident and wants to impregnate his wife. The play set a record in Mexico, surpassing 3,200 performances.
Below are some amazing fan made tributes left for 'Chespirito"
