Well, it’s been turning long enough but the rumour mill looks to be finally slowing down following the news from THR that Warner Bros. are setting up shop for [Suicide Squad](movie:2283363) in Pinewood Studios, Toronto in February. More importantly, the site confirms that Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Tom Hardy and Margot Robbie are all in the final stages of signing off as the aforementioned band of baddies that will undoubtedly tear through the DC Cinematic Universe.
Directed by [Fury](movie:866294)’s David Ayer, this still feels like the bravest entry to the DCCU, focussing on the titular team of villains who are hired by the government to go on do-or-die missions in exchange for lighter punishment for previous offences. You know the sort terrorism, high-level assassinations and causing major trouble for various superheroes. That sort of stuff.
Originally The Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie was the first addition to make the suicide pact, being confirmed early last month as Harley Quinn. This followed the intriguing whispers through the wire that Will Smith and Tom Hardy were in talks for a part as well. The real icing on this anti-hero flavoured cake came when Jared Leto was pegged to play the Joker and followed the revelation up by all but confirming he was taking the part as well. Expect Robbie to be throwing crazy doe eyes at the Clown Prince of Crime as he just goes flat out crazy in this, which I can’t wait to see.
The interesting things to note about this recent development is that with Courtney’s involvement being close to confirmation, it would suggest he could be taking the role of leader Deadshot; the lethal assassin and long running leader of the team in the comic books. That’s a big undertaking for a slow building star who’d be sharing the screen with the likes of Leto and Hardy, especially considering that he was being eyed alongside Ryan Gosling for the role.
With the lights waiting to go green for everyone involved, the site hasn’t confirmed just which role Hardy will be playing in this band of baddies (Captain Boomerang, perhaps?) but expect that to change in the coming weeks. There’s also no mention of Jesse Eisenberg who was rumoured to be bearing his bald head yet again as Lex Luthor, after he gets up to his predicted evil plans in [Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice](movie:711870). Either way, you can expect other massive reveals and shaky standard photos to start trickling out of Toronto in two months time before Suicide Squad jump into action August 5, 2016.
