It's official! Warner Bros. and DC's upcoming [Suicide Squad](movie:2283363) has locked down its sinister super villain crew. Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Tom Hardy, Jai Courtney, and Cara Delevigne will make up the troop of baddies for a August 5, 2016 release. After weeks of speculation, we've learned that most of the rumored names were correct, along with a few others.

The story of the Suicide Squad follows mostly incarcerated villains who are offered the chance to lower their prison time in exchange for completing a government black-ops mission. However, their chances of making it back to their cells alive is laughably slim, hence the series' tongue-in-cheek title.

We also may see Jesse Eisenberg reprise his role as Lex Luthor, after he makes his debut in [Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice](movie:711870). While Luthor would be a high-profile addition, the cast is looking pretty complete as it stands now. "But wait," you might be saying (to yourself, quietly, so no one questions your nerd cred), "I'm not really familiar with the Suicide Squad..."

Let's make some introductions.

Jared Leto as The Joker

Jared Leto's got some big shoes to fill after Heath Ledger's spine-tingling performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight, but at the guy can certainly rock some heavy eyeliner. Hey, it's something! The Joker is Batman's arch-nemesis and a criminal mastermind who revels in spreading chaos as far as he can. It will be interesting to see how he factors in to the Suicide Squad (it seems unlikely that such an unpredictable maniac would be allowed on a group-oriented government mission) and how his relationship with Harley Quinn will play out (I'm expecting fireworks).

Will Smith as Deadshot

As his name would suggest, Deadshot is an expert marksman with a cybernetic eye that grants him near-perfect accuracy. He began as a hired assassin, but with the Suicide Squad he is known for his "deathwish" of sorts. While he does not want to take his own life, he longs to die in spectacular fashion. So, this mission sounds pretty fitting! But since they landed such a big name for this role, something tells me that the movie version of Deadshot will wear have a full body suit with his face uncovered (or at least show his face more often), rather than the full metal get-up pictured above.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

FINALLY! We'll see Harley Quinn in live action. Once known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel back when she was The Joker's psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, eventually, "Mr. J" was just too alluring for her to maintain her sanity, and she joined him as a sidekick and sometimes-girlfriend. Harley is a lithe gymnast who can fight and scheme with the best of 'em, but her appeal stems mostly from her unhinged and often hilarious personality. This is a character we have been clamoring to see brought to life, so Margot Robbie certainly has her work cut out for her.

Jai Courtney as Boomerang

Jai Courtney is piling up the big roles these days in movies like [Terminator Genisys](movie:34872) and [Unbroken](movie:791899), and now he will be joining Suicide Squad in the role of Boomerang. His character will almost certainly be based on Captain Boomerang, who handles gimmicked boomerangs as his weapons of choice. Depending on the choices of the filmmakers, he could have limited superspeed and the ability to create his boomerangs out of pure energy. Boomerang is often depicted as having an extremely grating personality and racist views, making him the most detestable person in a group of literal lunatics. So...there's that.

Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg

Good thing Hardy is no stranger to bulking up for a role since he'll need to fill out Rick Flagg's painted-on turtlenecks. Flagg comes from a family of military men, and, as the one member of the squad without a history of crime, he is none too happy about being surrounded by a bunch of convicts. He is in peak physical health and is highly trained in stealth, surveillance, demolitions, strategy, and guerilla tactics. But whether or not he can survive his assignment without wanting to murder his teammates is up in the air.

Cara Delevingne as Enchantress

Delevingne may not have the lengthy resume of her fellow castmates, but she certainly has the "come-hither" look that suits Enchantress. Unsurprisingly, she has the ability to cast magical spells. Enchantress is known for operating on both sides of the law, as the magical force inside her can overpower her to the point of villainy. She will most likely rely on the Suicide Squad to keep her powers under control, but that's a tall order for a group of characters who are not exactly team players. Maybe she can just cross the comic book streams and call up Jean Grey or Scarlet Witch for advice on how to keep a handle on it?

But what about the boss?

Jury is still out on who will be playing Amanda Waller, the founder of the Suicide Squad and a true HBIC. Rumor has it that Viola Davis, Oprah Winfrey, and Octavia Spencer are all being considered for the role, and Oprah is reportedly Warner Bros.' top choice. I, for one, would love to see the talk shown queen show her ruthless side as the master strategist.

This may be Warner Bros. and DC's chance to make a fun-filled, ensemble-driven movie in the vein of [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073). Yeah, this is a group of villains who have a complete disregard for human compassion, but, in my mind, that's a recipe for laughs! Bring on the dark humor, I say. Based on the direction of other DC films, I have a feeling this isn't going to happen, but imagine the raw potential between the Joker and Harley alone! Ah, well, a guy can dream.

Who would you like to see cast as Amanda Waller, and how do you feel about the choices for the Suicide Squad cast? I want to hear it in the comments!
