The DC Cinematic Universe will be bringing the villains in 2016. After the anticipated Batman v.Superman: Dawn of Justice, the next film in the DC Cinematic Universe will be Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad is a group of villains sanctioned by the government to do covert missions or else they will be killed (hence the term Suicide Squad). David Ayer will be helming this superhero film; but more to the point, Suicide Squad has found its cast. Speculation of casting started immediately after Warner Bros announced their lineup of DC films, and rumors have circled for weeks about Joker's involvement with the film. Now these rumors can be put to rest as Suicide Squad will star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress and Jared Leto as The Joker. Joker's involvement in the movie is enough to get people's attention. However this official casting is indeed a strong start for Suicide Squad. While each of these actors bring something to the table, lets breakdown the three leads and their role in this upcoming blockbuster.

Will Smith as Deadshot

Will start with Fresh Prince of Bel Air himself: Will Smith. Will Smith has made a vast resume over the years; from his work in blockbuster such as Men in Black to his time in drama with movies like The Pursuit of Happiness. Now Smith will be dawning the role of Deadshot: one of DC Comics' top assassins. This indeed a different casting choice for both Deadshot and Will Smith. For starters, in the comics, Deadshot is white; but this is not an issue for the character as Deadshot's skin color is not among his defining traits. That being said, Deadshot is different kind of role for Will Smith. Smith is usually known for playing characters who are cocky as well as charming. The actor is not known for playing villains; well in this case anti-hero. So can Will Smith pull this role off? While it is still early to tell, I believe the actor can bring his astonishing charisma to role of Deadshot.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie is still building her film resume. Robbie was notice in her role on the short lived television series Pan Am; and she also made an appearance in the film About Time. However the role that got this Australian actress notice was in The Wolf of Wall Street; where Robbie played the role of Naomi Lapaglia. Since her break out role last year, Margot Robbie has been a major name circling the world of film; and she indeed has some major shoes to fill as the role of Harley Quinn. With the character's popularity, you would never imagine that Harley Quinn got her start on Batman: The Animated Series. Yet ever since the airing of "Joker's Favor", Harley has been one of the most popular Batman characters as she aids The Joker in just about all of his mad schemes. This could be a challenge for both Margot and the character of Harley Quinn. First off I would like to point out that I have not seen The Wolf of Wall Street; so I cannot weigh on Robbie's performance. However once I saw her name on the list of actors for Suicide Squad, the role of Harley Quinn was my first thought for Margot Robbie. Harley is known for being a part of the Suicide Squad; so it seems right for this villainous to have a part of the film. With this role being among Margot's first major blockbusters and this movie being Harley's big screen debut, the road ahead could be challenging; but it will be interesting to see nonetheless.

Jared Leto as Joker

And now here comes the big one: Jared Leto as The Joker. Over the years Leto has been in several movies, such as Requiem of a Dream and Fight Club. The actor took a major leap forward last year in the award winning drama: Dallas Buyers Club. The character known as The Joker needs no introduction. Like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joker's role in Suicide Squad will no doubt be a challenge. Joker was last seen in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, and was portrayed by the late Heath Ledger. The performance of Ledger is considered one of the best portrayal of a supervillain on film; and to this day, many see that role as an iconic image to the character. It did not help matters that Ledger passed away after production of The Dark Knight; so bringing Joker back to the silver screen will not be easy. The question now is can Leto take up the role as the Clown Prince of Crime? Like Robbie's 2013 performance, I have not had a chance to see Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club; so I cannot range him as an actor. However, in case I do not see that film before Suicide Squad is released, I will go in with an open mind and see what Jared Leto does with the role. There is also a matter of Joker's role in the whole DC Cinematic Universe, but that is a conversation for another time.

Suicide Squad has a strong start with the announcement of the film's leads as well as the rest of the cast. Many things remain a mystery about this film; such as will Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor be a part of Suicide Squad? Yet this official cast give us some idea of what is in store for this blockbuster. Though Suicide Squad is among DC's wild card movies; e likes of Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto as The Joker shows us that the studio is definitely pulling all the stops on this superhero film; of should I say supervillain film.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
