If you haven't heard yet, the Hunger Games trilogy is most likely going to continue after the end of the series with Hunger Games 4 (Mockingjay Part 2). To read more on it, click here
We're not here to talk about the details. We're here to talk about all the possibilities. What sort of movie would this be about? Is it a prequel? Is it a sequel? Is it a story following someone within the Capitol who watches Katniss's Games (President Snow's granddaughter maybe)? Is it about District 13's struggle to survive after being forced underground for the past seventy five years?
Whatever it is, this is exciting!
No joke, I'm hurting my fingers as I type right here so furiously. I'm a long time fan of this series. It's hard to mess this up. But as any avid fan, I have a few ideas on what director Francis Lawrence could do with a spinoff movie.
#5 View on the Games From the Capitol
As I've mentioned, I think this could be given an interesting insight if done from Snow's granddaughter's point of view. She's just a kid, and though she's a blood relative of Snow, she's just as innocent as Prim was when the series starts out. In fact, more so. Her grandfather hates Katniss, but she idealizes the heroine. I can see this version panning out as at least two movies, probably three if done well.
It's interesting enough to see things from the side of the Capitol. As Katniss explains, the people of the Capitol are kind of naive and aren't like other people. She hardly views them as people. So their perspective wouldn't necessarily change the way we see the Games, but definitely the way we see them. It would make us a bit more understanding to who they are. If not that we understand that they were raised on it, we can accept their naivety.
To add to that, this would also give us a unique insight into Snow himself. He has one granddaughter that he loves dearly. He doesn't even seem overly angry when he sees her wearing the braid. Sure, we as the audience know that that cuts right into him, but she has no idea. Watching her rooting for Katniss through the Games and how that affects Snow would add another layer to the story.
At the very end of the book Mockingjay, the remaining victors are asked to vote whether or not to put a final Hunger Games on for the children of Capitol officials. Johanna Mason points out that Snow has a granddaughter. If Lawrence made this into a trilogy, he could end it by throwing Snow's granddaughter into the Games. And whether he killed her off or not at the end of it all, the fact she goes in will signify a final end to the Games and the revolution.
#4 District 13's Story
The movie doesn't have to go all the way back to the origins for this one, but it could explain a little bit more of how District 13 works. Unlike the option following Snow's granddaughter, this would have to be a one time film, not a trilogy or series.
The film could go into how District 13 was ravaged by the flu that killed off many of it's citizens. It could even explain how President Alma Coin had lost her family to the disease. We'd have a bit more empathy for her than we do in the books or movies. The movie could end with Haymitch (originally, I wanted Plutarch but for obvious reasons that won't happen) talking to Coin telling her that their only hope lies with the Mockingjay. Then the screen could cut to footage of Katniss in the Quarter Quell fighting to save Peeta.
#3 District 12 Background
A lot goes on in District Twelve that we just don't see in the movies. Like the happenings int he Hob. The mines. The schools. Mrs. Everdeen's healing abilities.
This idea would need to be a TV series, possibly released on Netflix directly. An entire movie would not get enough of a following, but being released on Netflix would spark a big reaction from people of all kinds. If the series is done well enough, people who hadn't seen the movies or read the books would be able to keep up with it and have no issues.
The series could take place before Katniss was born and we could get to know Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen very well. We'd also get to see Mrs. Everdeen before she had her depression following her husbands mining accident.
#2 Sequel Following Katniss and Peeta After Mockingjay Part 2
For those of you who haven't read the books, tread carefully.
At the end of Mockingjay, Katniss and Peeta have two adorable little kids. It's only mentioned briefly. The movie that follows could be focused on Katniss and Peeta learning how to be parents. Learning how to deal with kids.
Katniss always said she never wanted kids, and now she has two. In the books, she even mentions how weird it was carrying the children. That at first, it terrified her. It wasn't until she held her daughter that she was no longer scared.
I don't know about you, but Katniss doesn't seem much like the mothering type. Especially after the war. And Peeta was destroyed by the Capitol's hijacking. I'd like to see the two of them fighting for normalcy for their children's sake.
It could also touch on the psychological wounds left behind by the events that happen in Mockingjay. What kind of a toll it took on Katniss and Peeta. While watching them, Lawrence could even have certain characters check in on the two. Some characters not touched on very well in the movies like Greasy Sae or Ripper. Or long time favorites like Effie or Haymitch.
#1 Haymitch's Story
Haymitch Abernathy is and always will be one of, if not my favorite character from the series. He's funny, dark, sarcastic, real and honest. Sure, he drinks a bit too much, but wouldn't you? After all he's been through, you should understand.
Actually, most people don't understand. People who hadn't read the books don't understand at all. And those that did, still don't understand everything about Haymitch. We know what happened to him in the Games and after to an extent. But we don't fully understand everything.
What is known about Haymitch's Games is that he was in the second Quarter Quell. That particular Quell required twice the amount of tributes to be reaped. That means that Haymitch inadvertently ended 47 other lives. That's a big toll to begin with. What makes it worse is what happens to him when he comes out.
I won't get into that now. What I want to add is something important regarding Mrs. Everdeen. Her best friend from childhood, Maysilee Donner, was in the Quarter Quell with Haymitch. She almost won, too. She made it to the final five before she finally died.
That gives a whole new layer to both Haymitch and Mrs. Everdeen. To add to that, Haymitch and Maysilee were allies at one point while in the Games. That means he and Mrs. Everdeen have a history hardly, if at all, touched upon in either books or movies. If this could be brought to light in a new movie, in this prequel, that would be magnificent.
Any of these five choices would be awesome. To be honest, I'm just excited that it's a possibility. If you're thinking some of these stories are too dark, you might be right. But Lawrence managed to make the films funny so far, though subtle at points, the humor is there nonetheless. It can still be done.
But what do you think?
