It's remarkable when one looks into the history of Half-Life 3. Just 3 years ago people were still making the disheartened statements of longing for a release date that they are today (they also claimed they were giving up hope even then). We had memes saying that Half-Life would never exist and everyone was fearing that they'd never have the title they felt like they were born to play.
Yet, in 2011 out younger selves received what we thought was a glimpse of hope! If you recall, an individual wandered through Valve's headquarters from PC Gamer and snapped some pictures of some remarkable looking concept art. All these years down the line and we still have yet to see anything that looks remotely like it. Was it a new IP? Was it Half-Life 3?
Half-Life 3 Concept Art?!
The series of images that surfaced were extremely strange, and due to their far off nature, we were under the impression that Half-Life 3 was taking a new direction or that it was actually for an unrelated project, namely EA and Spielberg's canned IMNO. This has since been disproven, so rather than rehashing old news, could this have been the direction that Valve was thinking of taking Freeman and Alyx?
If so, we can expect a very different adventure altogether. Naturally, Valve have long since expressed their desire to move away from the view of being the studio that could just make Half-Life titles. They wanted to become something more, and took on the likes of Steam and multiplayer games like DOTA 2 and Left 4 Dead.
If they have since abandoned this venture, we can be sure that Valve is clearly searching for a new direction for the conclusion of Half-Life 3. If it ever comes out, the release date will show how much Valve has matured over time.
Taking a look at the images, it seems that Half-Life would have moved out into space and explored some strange new races. Valve have still not addressed these images, and they may actually show us the development process that our beloved franchise may have gone through.
If these images are indicative of Half-Life's transformation over the years, we can be sure that if they ever release it, it's going to be a vastly different experience than what we're expecting. Valve have stated that Portal 2 is most likely their final game with a standalone single-player element, it doesn't interest them anymore. So what strange new directions could Gordon Freeman be taking?
I for one firmly believe that if they are working on Half-Life 3, it's not going to be a singlepayer, it won't feature a voiceless protagonist and it's going to be a complete departure from what the series demonstrated in the past (aside from you know...brilliance). What are your thoughts? Was this Half-Life 3 concept art that was leaked? Would you play a Half-Life like this?
