(Warning, this article will contain spoilers for The Last Of Us and Game Of Thrones Season 4. Be wary, yeah?)
Soon to be joining such illustrious company as Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, Metal Gear Solid and a whole bunch of other video game franchises that have narratives so vast that they don't require cinematic adaptations, Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic, emotional rollercoaster of a video game, the legendary The Last Of Us has seemingly found its Ellie.
17 year old actress Maisie Williams, most recently seen sticking the pointy end in low down, dirty no-gooders as Game Of Thrones' Arya Stark, has recently expressed interest in taking on the role of one of gaming's most precious pieces of cargo/sidekicks since Ico's Yorda.
“I didn’t know a lot about [the game]. I Googled it,” admitted Williams in a recent interview with IGN. When the news of the movie adaptation first hit, Williams was bombarded with tweets from fans, including Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie, saying she would be perfect for the role.
[Fans] asked her [Ashley Johnson] what she thought of me and she said, ‘That’s pretty much my dream.’ I don’t follow her but I was silently stalking her wondering what she thought of all this.
All it will take now is producer Sam Raimi and screenwriter/game director Neil Druckmann to push the movie into production as soon as possible, because Williams will have a lot of work on her hands with Game Of Thrones and the rumored movie adaptation of its lore.
For Those Of You Who Have No Idea What I'm On About
There may be spoilers ahead...so beware!
Ellie, the second protagonist in The Last Of Us is an orphaned, fourteen year old, snarky and quick witted survivor of the mutant Cordyceps epidemic. Born about 5 years after the outbreak, she was due to be smuggled out of Boston with her friend and guardian Marlene, for Marlene believed she had an important role to play in the curing of the infection.
Ellie is infected but the infection hasn't surfaced in weeks, when it normally takes two days to alter a person. After being wounded, Marlene recruits a reluctant Joel and Tess to smuggle Ellie out of the city and to locate other freedom fighters, known as Fireflies.
A little later down the line, after being captured by a military patrol, Joel and Tess discover that Ellie is infected and has been for weeks. They decide to continue their search for the remaining Fireflies in order to engineer a vaccine for the infection and save humanity. Phew.
Why Maisie Williams Would Be The Perfect Ellie
Arya Stark and Ellie share many traits: they're both orphaned, forced to grow up swiftly beyond their years, very strong willed, tough, cheeky, coerced into partnerships with stubborn, angry and battle hardened men and are both fantastically melancholy.
Through all of the prior seasons of Game Of Thrones, we've watched Arya grow up and turn into the cold blooded badass we left sailing her way to Braavos at the end of Season 4. Arya has lost friends, family, a direwolf and her home. That emotional journey of loss and growth is testament to Maisie Williams' tremendous skill as an actor.
I couldn't think of a better actor to play Ellie, apart from Ashley Johnson perhaps. So, if the film need be, make it Maisie Williams!
