Ah, Bond details. I've been expecting you.
Today, we were eagerly awaiting some major casting news from the upcoming Bond 24 - which has now also been given an official title.
In a live press event, it was revealed today that Daniel Craig's next James Bond adventure will be called Spectre - which, as fans of the series will know, is a name loaded with history. More on that later, but you can check out the moody title reveal below:
Other details were also released, notably that Bond will be cruising around in an Aston Martin DB 10 for this installment, replacing the classic Aston Martin DB 5 we saw in Skyfall.
Most importantly, the press release also announced a relatively complete cast list - with the addition of one particularly mysterious character. The cast is as follows:
- Daniel Craig as Bond
- Rory Kinnear as Tanner
- Ben Whishaw as Q
- Naomie Harris as Moneypenny
- Ralph Fiennes as M
- Andrew Scott as Denbigh
- Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx
- Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra
- Léa Seydoux as Madeleine Swann
- Christoph Waltz as ???
It is also worth noting that with filming due to begin at London's Pinewood Studios on Monday, I think we can assume this will generally be how the characters will look in terms of hair style etc. - so that's no beard for Waltz.
You can watch the entire announcement below:
Who is SPECTRE?
Bond enthusiasts should have no trouble placing the movie's title within the wider Bond canon. SPECTRE is an acronym which stands for 'Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion' - the name of a nefarious organization which became one of Bond's oldest and most long-running adversaries.
Headed by the white cat owning, Blofeld, SPECTRE appeared in From Russia With Love, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever and For Your Eyes Only.
The official tagline for the movie also seems to hint at a bit of Bond nostalgia:
A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.
So Who Is Christoph Waltz Playing?
At the event, director Sam Mendes made the fairly obvious omission of naming the character Christoph Waltz is going to play - despite the fact he did so for every other member of the cast.
According to IMDB and Deadline, Waltz is down to play Oberhauser - another name with some history in the Bond franchise. Lore states Hannes Oberhauser was Bond's Austrian climbing and skiing instructor with which he formed a strong, almost father-son relationship. However, Oberhauser would eventually disappear in mysterious circumstances.
The Daily Mail has reported that Waltz will play Franz Oberhauser, Hannes' son, who presumably contacts Bond. Could this be the mysterious message from his past? Does Franz have some daddy issues he wants to share with Bond?
Can We Already Discern Some Spectre Spoilers?
Despite the fact this was a fairly benign press event, it is possible we can work out a few potential spoilers for Spectre. With that in mind, consider the following spoilery.
Firstly, there's Waltz' character. Last week we heard that Waltz would be playing Blofeld - the traditional leader of the SPECTRE organization. The refusal of Mendes to name his character suggest that he could indeed be Blofeld, however this will only be revealed later in the film. Furthermore, the fact his former mentor's son is the mastermind behind an evil organization could be the "terrible truth behind SPECTRE" that Bond must reveal.
Another potential bad guy is Andrew Scott's character, Denbigh. Last week, we also heard rumors he would be playing the secondary villain of the film. This would seem to contrast with the casting announcement, as Mendes introduced him as part of the "Whitehall family." This suggest he in fact works for MI6 as Whitehall is an area of London known for its governmental buildings.
This leads us to a possible conclusion that Denbigh will be an agent for MI6 who betrays Queen and Country and is secretly working with SPECTRE. Also, what about the name. Denbigh definitely sounds like the name of a traitor, don't you think?
Are you glad to see SPECTRE returning?
