We’re just under a year away from Daniel Craig returning to theaters as our favorite MI6 agent and today the official title and cast has been revealed! Skyfall director Sam Mendes is returning to helm the 2015 release and he and the cast united at London’s Pinewood Studios, where production is set to begin shortly, to make the announcement. In addition to Craig, Ralph Fiennes is set to return as the new “M”, Ben Whishaw is back as gadget guru “Q”, Naomie Harris will once again play “Miss Moneypenny” and Rory Kinnear will reprise his role as MI6 Chief of Staff, “Bill Tanner”. New additions to the cast include Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, Sherlock baddie Andrew Scott, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista and new Bond Girls Monica Bellucci and Blue is the Warmest Color actress Léa Seydoux.
As for the title, the 24th installment in the popular franchise will be called “Spectre”. As many Bond fans know, “Spectre” is an acronym for “Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion”. SPECTRE is a global terrorist organization in the Bond Universe lead by classic Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld. It has long been rumored that Waltz will play Blofeld in the film, but his character was announced as being “Oberhauser”. In the Ian Fleming novels, “Hannes Oberhauser” was Bond’s Austrian climbing and skiing instructor and also father figure who mysteriously disappeared. Some are speculating that the Bond producers could be attempting to pull a Star Trek maneuver and it will be discovered in the course of the film that Waltz is really Blofeld.
As previously rumored, Bautista will play a henchman named “Mr. Hinx” and Andrew Scott is expected to play a villainous character as well. As for the plot of Spectre, the logline describes it as quote, “A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.” In addition to Pinewood Studios, the new Bond film will shoot in and around London as well as Rome, Mexico City, Tangier, Erfoud and the Austrian Alps. Spectre is set to arrive in the UK on October 23rd and then two week later on November 6th in the US.
