Looks like another familiar DC Comics baddie will be joining the impressive character roster of Zack Snyder's Batman v. Superman - KGBeast.
Okay, okay, so he may not be as familiar as other characters such as the Joker or Lex Luthor, but diehard DC Comics fans know the name.
Here's a little history lesson for all who don't: KGBeast is the codename given to Russian assassin Anatoli Knyazev. He was trained by The Hammer, a top secret cell of the KGB. As a result, Knyazev is skilled in several forms of martial arts, a master at using deadly weapons in combat and has had his strength was cybernetically enhanced. Created by Jim Starlin, KGBeast first appeared in Batman #417 (March '88), where he squared off against the Caped Crusader. He was eventually thrown from a roof after botching an assassination.
Anyways, back to the matter at hand. Our friends over at Badass Digest report that the character is set to at least make a cameo appearance in the film, stating:
Yes! Lex Luthor has many agents making his dark agenda a reality, an agenda that includes keeping an eye on all metahumans, mainly a woman who walks the streets today but who is seen in pictures from the 1800s. A wonder woman, you might say. At any rate, one of Luthor's agents has a name, and that name is Anatoli Knyazev. Hardcore fans will recognize that as the name of the KGBeast, a Batman villain introduced in 1988's classic Ten Nights of the Beast storyline. In that story the Beast, an enhanced agent of the KGB, came to the US to kill ten targets, and he did it with extreme measures, including poisoning an entire 200 person dinner party to get one guy. He battled Batman to a standstill, and at one point when entangled in the Batrope the KGBeast cut off his own hand to escape. He of course put a cybernetic gun on the stump, as you do.
You won't see this version of KGBeast in the movie, but the character name is there - in the script at least - for those who care to pick up on these little easter eggs.
This is both interesting, and exciting news! With the DC Cinematic Universe slowly beginning to take shape, does this mean we may eventually see more of the KGBeast in a future DCCU film? We certainly hope so!
This will not be the first time the character has appeared outside of the comics. Anatoli Knyazev has made appearances in Justice League Unlimited, Batman: Assault on Arkham and also in the hit CW show Arrow.
Batman v. Superman hits theaters March 25, 2016 and stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
