As I'm sitting here writing this in my college dining hall it occurs to me that I should probably go hide and type this in my dorm room. Because what I'm going to say will shock and offend many: Ryan Reynolds cannot be Deadpool.
Shocking, yes, I know. For those of you hiding under a Rock, Reynolds has been just recently confirmed to be the Merc with a Mouth in this 2016 release movie. Most of the internet was rejoicing. I on the other hand was sobbing into my teriyaki chicken.
Most of you are probably denouncing me and grabbing your pitchforks as we speak. I wish to put my hand up and offer some well thought out reasoning as well as dozens of Deadpool source material that I have read over the years. Its fine if you disagree with me, this is opinion after all. But hopefully this will make you think.
Deadpool is Dark
I think what most people think when they think Deadpool is, "Oh he's funny." And thats it. Because that's the extent of most people's knowledge of Deadpool.
Deadpool is not only funny, he his also dark, sadistic, and deranged. This series above, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe is a what-if scenario if Deadpool finally became sane. While this is not part of the canon storyline, that darkness resides in him whether you like it or not.
This arc from the mid 2000s is about how Deadpool wants to kill himself because he doesn't believe that there is anything for him in the living world wheras if he died then he would be with the personification of Death. Who apparently has breasts in the Marvel universe. Bottom line people, Deadpool has more depth, character, and darkness that most people imagine.
The question is, is Ryan Reynolds a skilled enough actor to evoke such darkness that is paralleled with the humor? Because don't get me wrong, Deadpool is funny. But there's more than just being funny. People got upset that Ben Affleck was Batman. But Affleck has shown he can be a capable actor when he wants to. Has Reynolds done the same?
The is the link to Reynold's page on Wikipedia. Please show me one movie he's been in that demonstrates his ability as a varied actor.
Deadpool is Deranged
Deadpool is funny. In a deranged sort of way. Don't get me wrong he's got great wisecracks. But he also is funny when he shoots his friends in the legs. Or punches Kitty Pride in the face. Ryan Reynolds is funny. But he's not that sort of funny.
This is the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool screen test because I know many of you would look to this as proof of his competency. I watched this and while the Internet apparently went nuts over it, I was left wanting. I mean I wanted to like it. And the visuals are certainly appealing, but the delivery felt forced and very flat. Also the voice doesn't really fit Deadpool. It doesn't sound the least bit crazy, and you would think that if his body is that scarred, something would be slightly out of whack with his vocal cords.
I actually find this Deadpool voice a lot more appealing because it sounds like Deadpool. The delivery is off, but you get the feeling of somebody who has mental problems.
Even Nolan North in the videogame has great delivery! I mean why couldn't we just use freakin' Nolan North! He's been a great Deadpool in everything else! He is like Mark Hamill being the Joker; its a role beautifully done.
Who Would Be a Better Deadpool?
Uhhh...Nolan North? The guy from Ultimate Alliance? But there are some others who have appeared on the screen who are great actors as well as comedians.
Joel McHale is a funny guy. Anyone who's seen Community can back this up. He has versatility, delivery, and actually the body for Deadpool.
But if you don't believe me, here are some of his best moments from Community:
Robert Sheehan is best known for his role as Nathan Young on the show Misfits. I recommend this show for the first two seasons and only if you are comfortable with serious mature content. Like seriously. Either way as Nathan, he brought out the immaturity, the hilarity, and the absurdity that Deadpool does posses. He is kind of skinny so he would need to pull a Gal Gadot to be Deadpool.
If anything Will Arnett has the voice. Like seriously. And he's actually a pretty funny. I haven't watched much of his stuff personally but I've seen him enough to to know that his voice alone screams Deadpool.
The world isn't over. We'll see if its a must or bust. I personally being a lifelong Deadpool fan (and before he became cool) would like to see it done right but what the hell. Life isn't all tea and biscuits. Deadpool interestingly enough sums up all my feelings about the issue pretty well.
Yes I would like to kidnap Ryan Reynolds and do something terrible with him. But I can't because life won't let me. But who cares? Form your own opinions.
