Despite the reappearance of the original Scott, Rogue, and Jean Grey at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, it's no big secret that as the current timeline progresses, we will see younger versions of these iconic characters appear. Thus far, younger recasts have gone down well for the other major players: James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are absolutely perfect as Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr.
So who is in the running for the iconic role of Jean Grey, and how does Famke Janssen feel about the candidates?
In case you didn't catch that, the three mentioned here are Hailee Steinfeld (Enders Game), Elle Fanning (Maleficent), and Chloe Grace-Moretz (Kick Ass). Janssen is very good-natured about essentially being replaced, although obviously she knew that this was coming! Her only complaint about any of the three possibilities was that there is very little resemblance between herself and Elle Fanning...and she most definitely has a point there!
Personally, I don't see much of a resemblance between Famke and Hailee Steinfeld either - the bone structure and jawline seem quite different (although with the magic of makeup, anything could happen!). Of course, it's not just about the looks, but they do matter.
Personally, I'm rooting for Chloe Grace-Moretz. She's already cut her comic-book-movie teeth with Kick Ass, and she was absolutely perfect in it. Even when she was barely a tween (around 12, depending on filming dates), she was an incredible actress in the film and took on some amazing action sequences. Now that she is older and more experienced (at the time of writing, Chloe is 17), I can only imagine what she could do with a part as huge as Jean Grey. Of course, the hair is all wrong, but a simple wig or dye job and we could have our Marvel Girl!
Whoever they decide to cast, I do have to be honest and say that I am happy to see the "original" cast phased out. In all honesty, I was a little frustrated to see them return at the end of DoFP, although I can understand the need to show a re-written timeline. While I feel that writing was to blame for the character issues in the first movies, the issues were there and it's time to move on and give Cyclops, Rogue, and Jean Grey a fresh take.
