It sounds like Jeremy Irons is gearing up to play a more involved version of Bruce Wayne's helpful butler and voice of reason, Alfred in the highly-anticipated superhero movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
According to Comic Book Movie, at the International Film Festival, Irons spoke on his upcoming role and stated:
He is quite a different Alfred than we have seen so far. Zack Snyder had very clear views about what he wanted...I would just say he's more hands-on perhaps than just a butler.
I think a lot of people would agree that Alfred has always been a bit more than just your average butler. He's also been a father figure, confidant, and friend to Master Wayne. He constantly goes beyond the call of even the most devoted steward. Regardless, it will be good to see Alfred in a different kind of hands-on role than before. Even if, as Irons says, it's "not a large role."
The description of this role sounds as if Zack Snyder will finally give us the ass-kicking iteration of the character from Earth One instead of Michael Caine's softer character in Christoper Nolan's Batman movies. If this is the case, Irons could be the one giving Ben Affleck combat training, which would be pretty awesome.
I'd be lying if I said with certainty that anyone could top Michael Caine's take on the character of Alfred Pennyworth, but Jeremy Irons might be just be the perfect person to usher in a new tough, ex-military Alfred era.
[Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice](movie:711870) is set to release in the US on March 25, 2016.
