While Vampire Diaries fans might have had a love/hate relationship with Elena, we all sorely missed her when she was sent into her eternal slumber and so many of us have a serious soft spot for the actress who portrays her, Nina Dobrev.
The talented young Canadian/Bulgarian was arguably the most versatile actress in the CW show before she left and her vibrant personality shines through in interviews in a way that makes you want her as a best friend.
Although we all remember her best as Elena (or, possibly Katherine, Tatia or Amara!), Dobrev has already packed plenty of roles into her 25 years, so lets have a look back on her life through the years before The Vampire Diaries and see what she's done since.
Nina Dobrev was born in Sophia, Bulgaria as Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva (or, Николина Константинова Добрева if you speak Bulgarian!). She emigrated to Toronto, Canada at the tender age of two with her family.
Dobrev attended J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School where she competed in rhythmic gymnastics and danced ballet and jazz. She went on to attend the arts program at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough, Ontario, and Ryerson University in Toronto.
The Degrassi Years
In 2006, Dobrev landed her first major TV role in Degrassi: The Next Generation. The actress who was 17 at the time, played Mia Jones, a single teen mom who became pregnant at the age of just thirteen.
If you want some inspiration in just how far your acting could come on in just a few years, check out Dobrev's kind of cringeworthy audition tape for the role below!
Away From Her
Dobrev might have gotten away with being a vampire without having to embrace the stereotypically gothic fashion, but she had already done her time in fishnets in 2006's Away From Her! Dobrev appeared in the critically acclaimed Canadian movie as the sympathetic teenage rocker, Monica.
Dobrev took her first trip back to the past in 2007's Fugitive Pieces in the role of Bella.
Never Cry Werewolf
Despite being in two critically acclaimed movies and a beloved TV show before, Dobrev wasn't above taking on a starring role in the (obviously) made for TV movie, Never Cry Werewolf in 2008.
Luckily, Dobrev's affinity for all things supernatural was destined to lead to much bigger and better things!
The Vampire Diaries
In 2009, Nina Dobrev first started scribbling into her diary and started a storyline that still has us obsessed five years later.
In a challenging role where Dobrev took on the characters of various doppelgängers as well as the shows mainstay, Elena Gilbert, her true star power finally began to show through.
Sadly, she decided to leave the show to pursue a big screen career and was sent into her eternal slumber at the end of season 6.
Let's Be Cops
N-Dobz hit the silver screen again in Let's Be Cops in 2014 alongside Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr and although she didn't have a huge amount of screen time, her scenes certainly turned heads!
The Final Girls
Nina slayed literally a metaphorically in 2015's The Final Girls and she used her comic timing and horror expertise to dazzling effect in her biggest big screen smash hit to date. If you haven't seen it, do. It's a stunner.
xXx: The Return of Xander Cage
There's already something to look forwards to in 2017 because we can see Nina alongside the legendary Vin Diesel in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. I can't wait!
