After Robin Williams passed away in August the world mourned the loss of one of the funniest people to have appeared on screen and stage. In the following days and weeks, we heard story upon story about ways that Williams had moved his fans and helped his friends and family, and today I heard one more than really touched me.
Though this is most certainly not a new story, it was something that I had never heard before and thought others might be as moved by it as I was.
Brian Lord, a writer over at brianlord.org, wrote about his experience years ago when he almost booked Robin Williams for an event. Though he didn't end up working with him, it came close enough that Williams' office sent over his rider.
A rider is a set of requests or demands that a performer makes as criteria for their performance. Often celebrities will be in the news for their outlandish requests such as Van Halen's famous request that they have a bowl of M&M's in their dressing room with the brown ones removed.
When Lord received Williams' rider, he was surprised by what it contained. A requirement that he had for every single event or film that he did was that the company hiring him also had to hire a certain number of homeless people and give them to work.
How simple, and yet so thoughtful.
This request was in addition to the many other charities he supported outside of his film career. It shows just what a great guy he was, that he took it upon himself to use his fame and celebrity power in such a compassionate way. I can only imagine how many lives he changed by giving some of the homeless people a chance, and how many minds he expanded within production companies with this request.
R.I.P Robin Williams, and thank you for continuing to inspire us, as well as make us laugh.
