As the year creeps to its chilly and snow kissed end, the gloom of the perpetual grey clouds has forced us in front of heaters or roaring wood stoves, allowing us to reflect on the time gone by and its many occurrences. How did you spend your year? Well I hope. I spent the majority of mine enthusing over video games, but I've been doing that for over twenty years now, so that comes as natural as blinking.
2014 was a good year for games, not the best with the deluge of messy releases, glitches and harassment, but we witnessed the release of some truly amazing indie games, the return of classic franchises and Mario Kart 8 win a Game Award for Best Sports/Racing Game, madness I tell thee!
So in celebration and remembrance of some of the year's most notable video game releases, here's YouTube-er Malcolm Knock's brilliant two minute collation of awesomeness. It truly is a great and evocative short. Eyes on the prize, readers!
How many games did you recognize in there? I recognized around 20...
How many do you own? If not many, the Christmas sales are just around the corner and you do deserve an extra little stocking treat, and a excuse to ignore the post-Christmas dinner bloat.
Here are five of my favorite excuses...
1. This War Of Mine - PC, Mac
As much as a Christmas game as Die Hard is a Christmas movie, This War Of Mine is an epic and deeply heartfelt foray into the heart of war torn terror. To put this game into simple words, imagine The Sims amidst a civil war. This truly is one of the best games of the year.
2. Goat Simulator - PC, Mac, Android, iOS
The name pretty much sums up what this insane, action packed, intentionally broken and utterly hilarious game is all about! Get ready to wreak havoc on the city with some seemingly indestructible goats, and earn points for headbutting and exploding petrol stations! Amongst an array of other mindblowing activities.
3. Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 - PS4, XB1, PC, PS3, X360
The king is back! Are you sick of the gloss of FIFA's annual offerings and the AI controlled team's obligatory, scripted 90th minute equalizer? Pro Evo 15 takes soccer by the scruff of its oily and well tanned neck and plays like the closest thing you'll get to the real deal. There's no way Chelsea F.C.'s John Terry will be catching up with Lionel Messi chasing a through ball in this game!
4. Hyrule Warriors - Wii U
A change from the programmed Legend Of Zelda. Hyrule Warriors is a crazy hack and slash arena game where you use many of the iconic characters in Zelda lore to slice your way through literally hundreds of enemies, leveling up and sourcing loot on your way! Great fun.
5. Alien: Isolation - PS4, XB1, PC, PS3, X360
A return to form for the much maligned game franchise, Isolation is as amazing as it is terrifying. Playing as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley, you are relentlessly pursued by a 8 foot tall xenomorph on board lingering aboard the space station Sevastopol and picking off the poor, frightened few people left. Fear is a good way of burning Christmas calories!
So which of those will you be demanding from Santa this year? I want ALL the games from the video and I haven't asked for anything from him yet. Here's hoping he won't disappoint!
Over to you: Which games did you recognize from the video, and which would you most like to play/have enjoyed playing?
