There are a lot of big franchises making bold returns to theaters in 2015. The list begins but doesn't end with Star Wars, The Avengers, Jurassic World, The Terminator, James Bond, and many more movies will be showcasing the latest episode in their respective adventures. However, one return should be at the top of everybody's list this summer. Mad Max is coming back in his rarified badass form.
George Miller (The Road Warrior, Babe) is returning to the franchise he created over 35 years ago. Miller is one of the primary innovators of the what we think of when we envision a post-apocalyptic future. His visual aesthetic can be seen in movies like The Book of Eli, in music videos like California Love, and videogames such as Borderlands and Fallout. He created what we now take for granted.
The character of Mad Max was once synonymous with the actor who brought him to life, Mel Gibson. However, Miller couldn't have chosen a better replacement to take the silent warrior into the next millenium. Tom Hardy has taken over the role of Max Rockatansky and he seems to inhabit the role like it was originally written for him. It's hard to imagine an action movie that would interest Hardy after this. The fact that he has signed on to follow this up with Suicide Squad is a very good sign for DC Comics fans.
Besides the pick-your-jaw-off-the-floor visuals, it is impressive how well the other star actors have disappeared into their roles. This film also features talent such as Charlize Theron (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past). Hopefully it is a sign of how fully they have immersed themselves into this post-apocalyptic world, where gasoline is like liquid gold and anarchy rules supreme. The movie looks flat out amazing and I have never needed to see a movie in 3D IMAX more than this one.
Check. This. Out.
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is the fourth film of George Miller‘s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.
Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos.
And… Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
