People have been excited since hearing that Prince Oberyn’s daughters from Dorne, commonly known as Sand Snakes, would play a role in the upcoming series. But excitement has turned to slight aprehension with the small, yet significant, addition of nipples on their bronze armor. Yes, nippled breastplates.

In the leaked photos of Game of Thrones season five we saw the return of this terrible costume design. This not only a tried and true recipe for ridicule, but is especially ironic considering the GoT author George R.R. Martin has used the phrase "as useless as nipples on a breastplate" on multiple occasions. Check them out below:

Even Michele Clapton, the award-winning costume designer for the series recently admitted to NY Mag that she wasn't a fan of the nippled design.

I’m not terribly keen on it...I don’t see the necessity for it. You don’t do it on men....Of course you have to have the woman’s shape. That’s fine. But [nipples on armor] is almost from a man’s point of view, and there’s something slightly cheesy about it.

As it turns out, at least according to Clapton, it wasn't a consious decision to include nipples on the costume. It was actually a flaw in the molds used to make the plates, which she didn't even notice until the set photos leaked.

They sand it off to an extent, but they didn’t do it as much as I wanted them to.

Of course, this hasn't been the first time we've seen these armor nipples. Also, Clapton was kind of wrong in saying that we wouldn't design a male costume like that. In 2011, Immortals had Henry Cavill in his own set of nips while playing Theseus.

But there's only one person you always have to talk about when discussing nipples in film (because it happens so often). Really, who could forget when George Clooney's Batsuit had been adorned with two peaks upon his breastplate in Batman and Robin? Certainly not George.

In his Reddit AMA, Clooney admitted that the thing he regretted most from his turn as the Caped Crusader were said nipples.

Well I wasn't thrilled with the nipples on the batsuit. You know that's not something you really think about when you're putting it on. You figure all batsuits have nipples and then you realize yours was really the first. Batman was just constantly cold I guess.

To be fair, the Sand Snakes could want some extra protection to avoid another situation like this.

In the end, this is so very far from being a big deal. Game of Thrones is easily one of the most entertaining shows currently on television. So if they want to put some nipples on their armor, I'll let it slide.

But if not even Game of Thrones can save you, nipple armor, then I'm afraid nothing will.

Author's Note: That was by far the most times I've had to write 'nipple' in one day. Nipple, nipple, nipple. It doesn't even look like a real word anymore.

Season five of [Game of Thrones](movie:817617) is set to air in April 2015.
