Weeks ago, the first trailer to Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit the web and it had moviegoers across the globe talking. Images from a Sith wielding a cross-guard lightsaber to the Millennium Falcon taking off had people reveled in excitement; not to mention speculation. As cool as the trailer was, there were many questions surrounding the preview. One of these questions was likely who are these new characters before us? From watching the trailer we know that John Boyega and Daisy Ridley will be taking center stage, but just who are they playing? Lets not forget about Oscar Issac's role in the film as well as the mysterious Sith featured in the preview. There are many things we still do not know about Episode VII; however a new report may be able to help in reference of the new characters.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, the new characters for The Force Awakens have been revealed. Disney and Lucasfilms revealed these names through a set of trading cards apart of the upcoming film's merchandise. The report does not seem to go into further details about the characters, but at least this group has names to be referred to as from now on. Without further ado, here are the names to Episode VII's new characters:

  • John Boyega is Finn
  • Daisy Ridley is Rey
  • Oscar Isaac is Poe Dameron
  • The Ball Droid is a character called BB-8
  • The Sith from trailer is known as Kylo Ren

These details may not be much, but at least it is something. Granted, there are a few things we can deduce from this news. For starters, the fact that Finn and Rey do not have last names may suggest that either the studios do not want to reveal that information just yet; or that the protagonists may some relation to known Star Wars characters. Another thing revealed is that Kylo Ren may not be a full Sith Lord as the character was not referred to as "Darth". Also Kylo is in fact a guy; which clears up speculation that was brought to my attention weeks ago. Furthermore, the droid BB-8 may have a bigger role to play in the film's ensemble. Then again, the droid could just be a minor part in the movie. After all this is Star Wars where even the most minor of characters have names.

While this information does not answer all of the questions, it does clear up some of the details about Episode VII. The report did state that more cards on the way; so there is bound to be more details coming. I am just happy to know I can call the likes of Finn and Rey something more then just male/female protagonist.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
