The After Movie Diner

"Selma" is a new film from Director, Exec. Producer and Writer Ava DuVernay, it's produced by Oprah Winfrey and stars David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Common, Wendell Pierce, Omar Dorsey, Tim Roth, Martin Sheen, Lorraine Toussaint, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr, Dylan Baker, Stephen Root, Ruben Santiago-Hudson and more.

Selma tells the story of a three month period in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Oyelowo) led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. It includes an account of the epic and strategic march from Selma, Alabama to the state capital, Montgomery.

I thought Selma was a beautifully shot, urgent, relevant and incredibly important film with a mesmerizing ensemble cast at the top of their game.

It is at times utterly heartbreaking, understandably brutal and difficult viewing and at other times inspiring and brimming with vibrant humanity. It has a complex script that walks the tightrope between personal, political and educational without ever becoming gratuitous, manipulative or, despite the rousing speeches, preachy.

It should be required viewing.
