I loved Pokémon as a kid - yeah, OK, so I still do - and while I always loved the inventive wordplay and creativity that went into creating the characters, I guess a lot of the darker, more disturbing Pokémon stories went over my head.
Check out 6 of the darkest, most twisted and bizarre Pokémon origin stories...
1. The Disembodied Human Face Pokémon
A Yamask is a dead person living on through a mask of their own face. Nothing creepy about that, nothing at all.
These Pokémon arose from the spirits of people interred in graves in past ages. Each retains memories of its former life. Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry.
2. The Voodoo Self-Harm Evil Doll Pokémon
A cursed doll come to life through its own evil resentment, Banette is basically Annabelle! The roots of Banette are linked loosely to the Japanese tales of the Tsukumogami - inanimate objects coming to life.
Banette generates energy for laying strong curses by sticking pins into its own body. This Pokémon was originally a pitiful plush doll that was thrown away. It seeks the child that disowned it.
3. The Macabre Hat Pokémon
Norman Bates has nothing on this guy. At least Norman Bates left his dead mother in relative peace, just chillin' on her rocking chair getting dusty.
It pines for the mother it will never see again. Seeing a likeness of its mother in the full moon, it cries. The stains on the skull it wears are from its tears. It wears its mother’s skull, never revealing its true face.
4. The Triple Bypass Pokémon
Spoink is not evil, just a ticking time bomb of heart-pounding danger. It should be kept in a special medical trampoline facility, not desperately bouncing itself into cardiac arrest on the Pokébattlefield!
Spoink bounces around on its tail. The shock of its bouncing makes its heart pump. As a result, this Pokémon cannot afford to stop bouncing – if it stops, its heart will stop.
5. The Soul-Stealing Pokémon
Lampent stalks the city, searching for the dying like an evil Florence Nightingale. It's also just reminded me of the Buffy episode about Der Kindestod, still the scariest monster I've ever seen... and I've watched A Serbian Film.
This ominous Pokémon is feared. Through cities it wanders, searching for the spirits of the fallen. It arrives near the moment of death and steals spirit from the body.
6. The Child Abducting Pokémon
OK, so there's another terrifying Pokémon that spirits away children - Duskull, who 'loves the crying of children' - but Drifloon is another level of childnapper. Drifloon pretends to be a balloon to lead children away. It's like IT. It's like freaking IT.
It tugs on the hands of children to steal them away. It is whispered that any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing.
