Next year will seemingly kick off a half-decade chock full of superhero, sci-fi, and animated films that will delight all sorts of fandoms. Still, it's safe to say that 2014 wasn't a year deprived of geek film: from comic books to young adult novels, the big screen is quickly becoming a part of our domain, with post credits scenes and easter eggs becoming prevalent even in films that aren't based off of games or books. Here are a few of my favorites!
5. Star Wars in The Lego Movie
[The LEGO Movie](movie:376368) was chock-full of easter eggs for collectors and new fans alike, but the one that stood out most to me was the sight of the Millennium Falcon and it's former pilot, Lando Calrissian. The Falcon itself features twice in the movie, and it's crew is composed of Han Solo, Lando, Chewbacca and C-3PO. Lando is voiced by none other than Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Daniels returned to provide the voice for Threepio. Given that Williams played Harvey Dent once, it was pretty cool to see him hanging out with Batman!
4. Our First Taste of Doctor Strange in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Now that Marvel has announced the official casting for [Doctor Strange](movie:559685) - and it's rumored that he may well have a cameo in [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) - let's look back to our first real mention of him earlier this year in [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](movie:254973). When Cap and Nat have Jasper Sitwell cornered on a rooftop, he mentions Doctor Strange as someone who's seen as a threat to Hydra. If that wasn't a guarantee that Strange isn't getting an origin story for a movie (yay!) then I don't know what is.
3. Star Trek nod in X-Men: Days of Future Past
Thanks to Patrick Stewart, Star Trek fans regularly collide (mostly in pleasant ways) with X-Men movie fans- but [X-Men: Days Of Future Past](movie:203942) took it one step further, back to the original Star Trek series, when clips from Star Trek's The Naked Time episode flicked on and off of small TV sets in the film. The Naked Time follows a plotline similar to Days of Future Past, and made for a neat geeky cameo.
2. Godzilla's Breaking Bad Reference
Say what you will about the movie, but: blink and you'll miss it! In the opening credits for [Godzilla](movie:45291), the movie decided to offer a nod to Bryan Cranston's most beloved current role: Walter White in [Breaking Bad](series:200567). While there's a lot about Godzilla that I'd like to forget, this was definitely a great little easter egg.
1. Stan Lee in Big Hero 6
This was far from a well-hidden easter egg, but Stan Lee's cameo in [Big Hero 6](movie:425271) was one of my favorite easter eggs of all time - and so, my favorite this year! I won't go into specifics since the DVD will more than likely not release until February, but the way our Generalissimo's cameo works into the movie was super creative and fun to watch.
