Since the announcement of the impending Captain Marvel movie, I've taken a lot of time to think who would be best to embody the role. Who would be the best choice to lead the female side of Marvel?
I'm not trying to neglect Black Widow, but a [Captain Marvel](movie:949779) film is exciting news! She has a long resume and a lot of complex relationships with other Marvel characters. It's a huge step for female superheroes, scratch that, superheroes in general! Besides, I love that she doesn't strut around in a tiny bikini style outfit. After a lot of contemplation, Natalie Dormer is my definitive pick for the role. Now let me tell you why...
1. Age Appropriate
Carol Danvers - AKA Captain Marvel, AKA Miss Marvel - is a mature woman. Carol is an officer in the United States Air Force when she obtains her powers. We can't have some 18 year old taking hold of this role, the depth needed just wouldn't be there. An actress with some life experience needs to be gifted this role. We need someone who can own Carol's persona. Wallflowers need not apply. Any doubts that Dormer can't be a confident, mature super hero? Check out the video below (about 2:30) where she owns the floor.
2. Physical Skill
Captain Marvel is a skilled pilot and hand-to-hand combatant. Just check out Dormer's Mockingjay skills as a film director from the Capitol who joined the rebellion along with her camera crew... Need I say more? Regarding the role, Natalie Dormer stated:
So it will be interesting to see what people think of Cressida. She looks cool, but she’s not a woman who’s defined by a romance or a man. Isn’t it a shame when women feel they have to rely on sexuality as their default mode? Sometimes a woman’s looks or sensuality are too readily wrapped up in their power.
3. Difficult Relationships
Carol and Captain Marvel, the Kree warrior (Mar-Vell) met (investigated) and became friends and then lovers. It was a relationship that changed her forever. Long story short, Carol’s genetic structure melded with Mar-vell's. Mar-vell remained unaltered, however Carol was now a perfect hybrid of Kree and human genes, possessing all of Mar-vell's Kree knowledge and training. And that's how Miss Marvel was born.
If you need to see a difficult relationship, look no further thanThe Tudors
. King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn (played by Dormer) is one of the most infamous relationships of all time. Divorce, a change of national religion, war, and beheading. Sound difficult enough?
Let's not forget about her many relationships in [Game of Thrones](movie:817617). I mean anyone who can deal with Joffrey has to be an unbelievable person (actress), right? While Dormer's character, Margaery Tyrell, isn't out there battling and slaying her enemies, she is manipulating her way into the throne. Some would say that's even more difficult than the stab and grab method. I surely would say.
4. Intelligent and Cunning
Carol has a long list of occupations which include editor, intelligence agent, and NASA security chief. Proving that whom ever gets to play her has to be able to play smart! Look no further than Dormer's time as Moriarty/Irene Adler on Elementary. To quote Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock "the woman is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."
Besides all these obvious qualities, Dormer has a three-film deal with Touchstone Pictures (a division of Disney), which has never been exercised. The only glitch is that Dormer appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger. However, Chris Evans (Captain America) also played the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four, so it wouldn't be the first time someone has played two characters in the Marvel Universe. And let's be honest, that worked out really really well!
"I feel like I've really earned my stripes - I feel ready to play a lead. I would just love to prove I'm good enough to carry a project." - Natalie Dormer
I do hope you get to carry a project Dormer, I really do...
