It's getting to be that time of year again. Yes, Christmas, but with Christmas comes the Doctor Who Christmas Special, arguably my favorite present of the year. This year appears to be no exception with the release of their latest trailer. Check out special guest's entrance below:
Let's do what we do best and break this baby down for you holiday-loving Whovians.
It begins with a bang and some mysterious aliens.
As many Doctor Who episodes tend to include. Except these are really creepy looking and they're wearing some kind of Marty McFly-style vests. I don't recognize them off the top of my head, so if anyone has any suggestions as to who these are, please let me know in the comments section!
Then comes the toys. First, various Slinkys...
Which, of course, made me feel like this:
Then some toy robots...
I wonder what kind of fire power those toy guns have. I'd love to see them go head-to-head against the Cybermen!
Santa riding on Rudolph, naturally.
Not going to lie, this looks pretty epic.
Then BOOM Santa is actually Nick Frost.
What a tweest! I should have known all along. Look at that man's body of work. He's been bringing joy to the masses for years now.
And he came in packing some serious heat.
Okay, so one guy actually had a balloon animal of some sort, but this Santa is not joking around. Or maybe he is, I don't know yet.
This episode has already piqued my interest because we know that the Doctor has ties with Santa Claus (as was pointed out by YouTube commenter Kopitarrules). Remember this?
Rose Tyler: Look at you, beaming away like you're Father Christmas!
The Doctor: Who says I'm not, red-bicycle-when-you-were-twelve?
Rose Tyler: What?
Presumably either Santa or the Doctor have met before, or perhaps the Doctor is a regenerated version of himself. It's unlikely, but still a fun thought! Or maybe we have this type of situation on our hands again.
I will concede that the trailer seems a bit tailored towards a younger generation, but is that a problem? Oftentimes the viewership for the Christmas Special episodes reaches a larger age range and we should be quite used to seeing a lighter, less gritty episode than the usual programming. So, should we really condemn an episode solely based on a short teaser trailer?
The Doctor Who Christmas Special is always something I look forward to watching. They're rarely very memorable episodes, mainly because they're standalone episodes that won't tie into the larger storyline. Even so, they've become a holiday tradition! I can't think of a better way to conclude a day full of festivities than plopping my bloated butt down on the couch for some quality Doctor Who time.
The [Doctor Who](series:200668) Christmas episode "Last Christmas" will air on Dec 25, 2014.
