In terms of the quality of acting talent, Warner Bros has assembled the Justice League of accomplished actors to make up the cast of their upcoming adaptation of the Suicide Squad. Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Tom Hardy are just some of the names that will be let loose in the DC Comics' cinematic universe.
The Suicide Squad is about a collection of criminals who are given a covert government mission that will almost certainly result in death. If they somehow make it out alive, they are given a pardon for their crimes and they (hopefully) get the explosive removed from their head, which keeps them in check. The ringleader of the operation is Amanda Waller, a no-nonsense government official. She is just as twisted as the criminals she employs and often keeps them in line with manipulation and psychology from behind her desk, or in the field. The new interpretation of Waller in the New 52 is more of a field operative, while in the classic depiction she is portrayed as heavier. However director David Ayer (Fury) has an extremely talented actress that could go in either direction with the casting of Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder, The Help).
Of the three main nominees rumored to be under consideration to play Waller, including Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, Davis seemed to be the most logical pick. She has both the acting chops and credentials to command respect while on screen with the film's huge movie personalities. Yet she doesn't have a profile as large as Oprah, which may have pulled viewers out of the movie. Not to mention, she must have been much easier to lock down to a multi-picture contract. It is unlikely that this film would be the last appearance of Waller. In the comics she has both government ties and associations with places such as S.T.A.R. Labs, where Cyborg is eventually created.
Davis will hopefully be joining a surprisingly distinguished line of actresses who have portrayed Waller in the past including, Pam Grier and Angela Bassett. According to Latino Review, who broke the scoop, the deal is in the final levels of negotiation. However, it is a complex situation since they have to navigate around Davis' TV shooting schedule. Provided that it all gets worked out, get used to seeing Davis as the face of the Suicide Squad.
Suicide Squad opens August 5th, 2016.
