Last week, Entertainment Weekly officially released the names of five main characters in [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](movie:711158): Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), BB-8 to ball droid, and Kylo Ren (a male character, though his identity is not clear as of yet). But yesterday, another name was discovered by Stitch Kingdom while reviewing Disney's copywrights for each name: Captain Phasma.
Outside of the name, little to nothing is actually known about the character, but fan speculation has run wild, so let's recap my favorite possibilities for this Star Wars 7 mystery.
Most Popular Theory: Gwendoline Christie's Imperial Officer
While small factors seem to change here and there every time we hear tell of a new plot detail, the basic story that's been repeated on every spectrum about Gwendoline Christie's character is that she serves as an Imperial officer, leading the stormtroopers, and is particularly involved with Finn. She's supposed to be his commanding officer - but what's more, Christie wears Chrome Trooper armor, and according to some, wields a lightsaber.
It doesn't take force-sensitivity to ignite or even use one (as demonstrated by Han in Empire Strikes Back) and these sources say that Christie has been training with a lightsaber - not that she'd need it, given her ace swordsmanship as Brienne of Tarth in [Game of Thrones](movie:817617).
The Rebel Captain
'Captain' is pretty widespread title among those in charge of ships and those who pilot them, so we could be seeing Captain Phasma as one of the good guys - like Captain Panaka. Given that Oscar Isaac is portraying a Rebel pilot, we might see his superior in Captain Phasma.
The Supporting Character
There actually isn't a lot of rampant speculation on Phasma as of yet (in comparison to the main characters, at least) but let's all remember that Captain was also a title taken on by Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon. All you really have to do for the title is be the acting Captain of a ship, so this character could be as insignificant as a random port pilot, or as significant as the main trio themselves.
It's just strange that this particular name was filed alongside those of the main characters, isn't it?
