If there is one example of a book turned into a TV series, The Vampire Diaries is surely running on the list. The irony of turning books into movies or TV series, is the manipulation of stories which brings a different approach to the viewers. Of course, book lovers get much more excited to see characters whom they just imagined in the literature world to move onscreen. But the paradox of it, it's not really meant to fulfill what they have expected to see on TV. On the contrary, there are a lot of twists and turns in each main character's stories. Hence, I'm eyeing on this romantic turned platonic relationship of Stelena.
In the book, they're endgame but I don't think it's happening now on TV. I must admit, the fandom is really head-over-heels with Delena moments and it's a tough thing to deal with especially for solid Stelena fans. (Just expect the shipwars, of course, it's still rambling on social media sites.) But I guess, even I feel horrified to say this, I don't still see the spark between Stefan and Elena anymore in the current season and even just a glimpse of regaining the romantic feelings. Then, I think the series will end up on what consumes their viewers. It's already half a decade but through the years of it, I have been on the virtue of hoping that these two will get back to each other again since Paul Wesley mentioned the writers' power to reset things in the latest season. Sadly to say, I don't think their proposing to boost the Stelena feels again but rather trying to make way for other love interests of both Stefan and Elena. (You know who are these characters I am referring to, right?) The point is, the memories that have had touched us in the season 1 will somehow be renewed in season 6 but not on what we, Stelena fans, expect to see on Stefan and Elena--but how will these characters interact with each other as separate ones growing individually.
And so, before the TV series ends, I would like to pay a little tribute for this surreal endgame. (That I'd hope to read the book first rather watch it on series) While Julie Plec has not yet fully affirming that there will be season 7, I'll just reminisce the moments I've had during Stelena feels. Here's a Top 5 Stelena moments that held our breath away to reality:
1. I met a girl. It was epic.
Who would never get melted by these scene when Stefan confessed his true feelings to Elena? That moment was pure and epic. We saw how Elena sparkled her eyes as she hears the Romeo-dialogue of this Salvatore sweetie. When Stefan said these lines, I totally fell in love with this fictional character. The flingy tension between these two had seriously came to a breed of epic love stories.
2. Elena gazing at Stefan. Stefan noticed it.
I have to admit, I'm squealing while writing about this Stelena scene. Seriously? They nailed it! The comfort that this couple gave to Stelena fans was just fantastic. I bet, a million fangirls are still dreaming to have this kind of love interaction--less kissing but passionate gazing and hugging on bed. Truly, that's what you call romanticizing respect of each other as couple. Sadly, I don't get to see this anymore even on Delena moments. (I don't mean to offend anyone.)
3. The Phone Call
Remember this line, "Stefan, I love you, hold on to that." ? Well, this line came from our beloved human Elena who just abruptly died on the final episode of season 3 then just buried from nowhere else when season 4 came in. Hard thing is, we can never take the human Elena back again on Season 6. I guess, we just have to deal with it. However, let me just focus on how Stefan emotionally tries to contain himself from hearing the voice of the love of his life through a phone call. It was epic! (So, how many times should I mention the word "epic"?) His silence says it all. The pain he gets whenever he misses Elena, the smile he couldn't put out on his lips when his heart is ripped apart knowing he couldn't take it back, the sorrow he feels whenever he sees Elena from afar. That phone call of torment had expressed everything about the struggling hope of our poor Stefan.
4. The Compulsion Scene
Do you still remember this scene where our lovely villain Klaus compelled Stefan to bite human Elena and then turn off his humanity? That moment was heart-wrenching but satisfying. Let's just state the fact that Stefan resisted himself from killing Elena yet took him long hours to bite her. However, Elena stood still and remained calm to convince Stefan not to kill her and use his humanity to resist the rage. Guess what? Even Klaus noticed the strong connection of these two! I totally swear that even my delusional mind can boldly tell it. Klaus did even say that Stefan's love for Elena is what keeps his humanity on track. Well, this scene had proven it.
5. They both wanted their human life back again
Though in some ways, this should not be entitled as a romantic and steamy Stelena scene but just by looking at them, it was totally nostalgic yet gratifying. It seemed that this was the last moment that we get to see Stefan and Elena fall in love with each other in separate ways (It was just a fantasy. Thanks to the travellers. We still had time to accept that it might be their last. Maybe, just few of us.) I hate to say this, but their relationship is not progressing in romance anymore but as best of friends--it has become so platonic. It's very rare to have this kind of relationship in reality when you have had your first love then suddenly fell out of love yet mutually decided to remain as friends. I guess, TVD writers are great at that but not too convincing.
"I mean, never say never. But I just can’t really see it happening, unfortunately. And I hate to say it for those Stelena fans. But it’s just become so platonic."
-- Paul Wesley said in his interview with Vulture
We're already half the season and we still can't see the spark between Stefan and Elena. Maybe, we'll just have to wait and see what will happen next in this season. Whether will the writers put them back together or just let them fall out of love forever. I'm just one of the fans who is still rooting for them to find their way back to each other's arms again but I guess, if it still doesn't happen, I'll just contain my agony to finish the whole series since it has become a part of my life for already half a decade. However, for Stelena fans out there who somehow lost their interest in watching the series, just contemplate with the fact that the season hasn't finished yet. We don't even know yet what the Executive Producers and Writers have in their minds. Nevertheless, it was a good series to see these characters develop on their own which somehow became the reflection of our reality. I'm not yet prepared for this series to end but as time passes by, I'll be able to get that over in my head before it gets in me.
Let's see that for next year. Enjoy the holidays everyone!
