Some major[Suicide Squad](movie:2283363)rumors have made their way online, thanks to reddit user oldcomicbookfan. According to his account, he was part of a focus group at Warner Bros. where they tested a few different key possibilities about the upcoming film. He claims that while some things are already set in stone, others have yet to be decided. Obviously, though these are now just rumors, they have the potential to be major spoilers, so read ahead at your own risk.
Here's the most substantial information we learned from oldcomicbookfan's account:
Harley Quinn may be the protagonist
According to "general conversations" around the user's focus group, Harley Quinn appears to be the film's likely frontwoman. Apparently, they were asked the most questions about Harley Quinn in particular, making it seem like Warner Bros. is trying their darndest to get this beloved character right. Definitely a good move on their part.
This certainly isn't a bad idea. Margot Robbie remains a star to watch after her pivotal role in [The Wolf of Wall Street](movie:16412).
Speed is the tonal inspiration for Suicide Squad
Okay, so this one's a little out of left field, but bear with me for a second. According to the reddit user, the director David Ayer (who most recently directed [Fury](movie:866294)) is looking to 1994's Speed as a reference point. Specifically, Ayer is looking to draw from the "blend of action with a time sensitive conflict." This leads me to think that a bomb (or multiple bombs) will be playing a major role in the plot (a weapon that Harley is all too familiar with, giving even more credence to her starring role if this is true). More on the bomb potential a bit later.
Seeking a balance of comedy and action
With the Suicide Squad especially, this dynamic is important, if not downright essential. This story can be made or broken based on Ayer's handling of the dark comedy, and supposedly the films he cited for reference were The Raid (serious) and 22 Jump Street (comedy). After the success of [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073), it doesn't surprise that Warner Bros. and DC are looking to imbue a little bit of humor into their decidedly serious franchise. However, this is first and foremost still an action movie, so we still need those explosive, jaw-dropping battle scenes.
The plot may revolve around Harley Quinn and the Joker's connection
If Harley is the protagonist, it only makes sense that her puddin' would factor in prominently (especially with a big name like Jared Leto in the role). With Harley at the center, Joker will likely be the threat. According to oldcomicbookfan, after Joker has placed bombs around Gotham, Amanda Waller calls on his estranged girlfriend Harley to help find and dismantle them. However, the Joker has a few more tricks up his sleeve, and the bombs are only the first gag to set things in motion.
Another possible plot beat that he mentions is Harley betraying the Suicide Squad for the Joker. A separate plot possibility follows a conspiracy between Lex Luthor and the Joker, which would explain why Jesse Eisenberg is still being pursued to take up that role in Suicide Squad.
And, lastly...DEATHSTROKE WILL STAR?!
This redditor with the potential inside scoop is adamant about Deathstroke's involvement, confirming that he saw "realistic but tech-geared" concept designs for the ruthless assassin. Writing to our friends at ComicBookMovie, he insists that he also saw Deadshot concept art (so that character is not totally off the table), but Deathstroke was a major feature.
In terms of his involvement in the story, the insider claims that Deathstroke is Amanda Waller's personal bodyguard, and he receives orders to join the squad to ensure they stick to the mission.
Here's my cursory guess based on these reports: Tom Hardy will be playing Deathstroke and not Rick Flag. Flag is the only character that oldcomicbookfan didn't mention by name, and if he is essentially the Squad's overseer, why not just give that role to the bigger, badder Deathstroke? Plus, Hardy is such a huge name (and will only get more attention after [Mad Max: Fury Road](movie:41445)), I'd imagine he would be much more attracted to an expert mercenary who could eventually reemerge to fight Batman. But, perhaps this is just what I want to see. *sigh*
So what do you think? Did Warner Bros. execs place Deathstroke in there just to throw us off, knowing that much of this information would leak online? Or, have they been misleading us thus far with other characters, and this is the biggest spoiler yet?
