While most outlets had been pretty sure of this casting as of last week, we've now officially gotten a statement from [Marvel](channel:932254) saying that Mike Colter, known for his work in [Zero Dark Thirty](movie:332744) and [Halo: Nightfall (Digital Feature)](movie:1427493), will debut as Luke Cage in Marvel's A.K.A. [Jessica Jones](series:1168773) alongside star Kristen Ritter.

[Luke Cage](movie:586393) will play a huge part in the major changes that happen in Jessica's life - our heroine starts as a gritty detective trying to rebuild her life after a failed initial run as a superheroine, but upon meeting the beefy strongman, things start to change.

It's pretty interesting to see Luke Cage introduced through the eyes of Jessica Jones: debuting a hero character through a heroine's story is something we haven't really seen since Angel spun off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I bet Whedonites are grinning over that reference.

Jones and Cage lead The Defenders, which include [Daredevil](movie:47230) and [Iron Fist](movie:6462). The latter of the two superheroes has yet to be cast, and [Luke Cage](movie:586393)'s standalone series is expected to follow A.K.A. Jessica Jones. It's not out of this world to expect the detective herself to feature in Cage's show, either: In Marvel lore, the two are lovers, and in certain storylines, their daughter becomes Captain America.
