Filmmaker Justin Lin, famous for directing four movies in The Fast And The Furious franchise, is to direct the next Star Trek movie, it has been confirmed.
Many directors were considered but, reportedly, Lin was the only one to be offered the role.
JJ Abrams, who directed the last two instalments in the Star Trek franchise, elected not to direct this one in order to concentrate another of his projects, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The news received a mixed reaction on twitter:
The cast is not confirmed, but actors who starred in the first two movies, including Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, are expected to return.
A release date for the prequel is yet to be announced but there are rumours it will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the very first Star Trek series, Star Trek: The Original Series. The 50th anniversary falls in September 2016.
