For many of us, high school was awkward. In my experiences, very few things surpass the awkwardness that looms heavy in the air around prom season. Everyone is thinking Will I get asked? Who should I ask? Wait, how should I ask? it's a complicated time for everyone.
One of the things that I could imagine helping me get throughout that awkward month of trying to snag a date would be with the help of the inimitable Robin Williams. For Skyler Gisondo, that was the case.
Gisondo who plays Ben Stiller's son alongside Robin Williams in the recently released film [Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb](movie:859388), was off filming this year, but he still didn't want to miss out on asking a girl to the prom. So, he had the brilliant idea of using the two comedy magnates as leverage to asking a girl to his high school prom. Of course, it was not without some of Robin's trademark wit and impressions. Check out the awesome video here:
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the late, great Robin Williams was very hands-on in the asking process:
All morning, Robin was pitching more ideas...He was saying 'Can I say this? Would it be appropriate to say this?' You're Robin Williams. You can say whatever you want!
Of course, putting a person of Robin Williams' caliber in front of a camera will always yield unexpected, yet magnificent results. For many of us, standing beside and swapping jokes with Robin Williams is a dream that will never be fulfilled.
It turned into this three-minute, ridiculous thing. A prom-posal. I realized that was the most awesome three minutes of my life and I've accepted it will go downhill from there.
Although I never got to meet the man who taught me everything I know about being funny, if the outpour of love and support for Robin Williams is any indication, I know the people who were lucky enough to spend even a moment alongside him will never forget the strong and lasting effect he had on their lives. In Gisondo's own words:
Robin was this bottomless reservoir of kindness and hilarity.
It was just so special to work so closely with this guy whose movies I've grown up with and watch his preparedness and his kindness.
And, no surprise here, Skyler got a date to the prom!
Rest in peace, Robin. We miss you.
