With the hype of Star Wars episode VII ratcheting up to an all time high with the release of the trailer, many have forgotten about the business and the hidden agenda of George Lucas and his plan for the Star Wars Franchise.
Back in the 1970's, when the first Star Wars came out, George Lucas was even then planning bigger and better things for the franchise. He knew after the success of A New Hope that this was going to be huge.
According to The Secret History of Star Wars blog, the original idea was Star Wars to be twelve movies! Twelve huge movies.
The twelve episodes would be divided up into trilogies. However, look on the sheet, the sheet says 12 episodes. However, Disney confirmed that there will be a 7, 8 and 9. However, they have not said anything about 10-12. This could potentially mean that the 10-12 would be the standalone movies.
To further back this theory that episodes ten through twelve would not be part of the saga and in turn be standalone movies is the fact that Disney has confirmed that they will be working on 2-3 standalone movies. This would mean that the original plan for twelve movies still stands, only 3 would be standalone and the other three would be saga.
Disney has been quoted saying on Screen Rant this:
“There’s been speculation about some standalone films that are in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films. Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8 and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too.”
So now the question is, what characters will be part of the "Not part of the overall saga"?
One suggestion is to feature a movie with Starkiller. The secret apprentice of Darth Vader between episode 3 and 4.
How about Yoda? However, Yoda has had a huge impact on the saga, so I doubt they will be making a standalone for him. But it's very likely there will be based on the fact Yoda is a bad ass.
Boba Fett is another choice example of a character that had very little screen time, but huge impact on the story line and movies. Who was this mysterious bounty hunter? How did he work, what was his end-goal. Playing Bounty Hunter for PS2 answered some of those questions, and to see him using more tools would be awesome!
Other characters that could have a standalone movie :
- Darth Maul
- Jango Fett
- Jabba the Hutt
- A movie based on the Republic Commandos
- Bail Organa
- Lando Calrissian
So not only has Disney confirmed that there will be standalone movies, it appears that what is written as episode 10-12 are actually planned to be standalone movies. It looks like they will appear between each episode, using the same formula as the Avengers and their Marvel properties.
