Robert Downey Jr.'s reign as Iron Man is far from over, but as we have seen from our coverage of the event Marvel hosted this past October and other big announcements aimed towards the press, when it comes to planning for these types of things, producers like to stay pretty far ahead of the curve.
So far ahead, in fact, that there are rumors circulating already for a hypothetical new Iron Man in [Iron Man 4](movie:886190), set for 2019! Who could possibly replace RDJ?
Well, according to bamsmackpow, it's Ty Simpkins, who already appeared as Harley Keener from [Iron Man 3](movie:24391) and who will also appear in [Jurassic World](movie:32752) who is rumored to take over in some capacity as Iron Man.
Talk about a kid who's currently living the dream -- He gets to be in blockbuster movies, in pretty significant roles, and he's only 13! Obviously, you should take this with a grain of salt. But just think about it, if these rumors are true, he will be passed the baton in a few years as the newest Iron Man at the young age of 17/18 (the time they would be filming). I guess I could see Tony grooming him into the role, but I just don't know. I mean, he was born in 2001!
Plus, I don't really even know if RDJ is done playing Stark, to be completely honest. After [The Avengers: Infinity War](movie:738027), we really have no firm idea of what Marvel will do. Downey Jr. is getting up there in age, and by 2019 he'll be 54, but what kind of middle-aged man would pass up on millions of dollars to continue playing a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist? I would milk my time as Iron Man until the last bit of scrap metal fell off of my body!
And to be replaced by a kid? I think the risk Marvel would be taking would be too great for that to happen. The movie isn't the same with a fresh-faced 18-year-old Iron Man. Part of what makes RDJ so great is the fact that he's witty in an older man's way. He's not young like most of our superheroes.
Robert Downey Jr. completely nails the jaded, semi-entitled playboy role and I think whoever decides how to replace him needs to be VERY careful. They took a chance on RDJ and it paid off BIG time. They can try something crazy again, but they need to make sure they get it right.
Would Ty Simpkins be able to play Iron Man in 'Iron Man 4'?
